canadian income tax

you might want to file as a "factual" resident of your former province and pay less than the 15% as per nonresident of canada tax treaty with mexico.
i have noted on all these boards that nobody has addressed this except mine of course.

Good Idea....Just make sure you understand the rules. For example I don't pay Oregon state taxes because I am gone from the state for 11 of the 12
months of the year. Most US states have partial resident forms also. Strongly suggest research into your invidual state or province as it could affect
your health insurance in your province for example. Saving on your taxes while cool insn't so if you lose your government health insurance by being
out of the country longer than so and so.

when did oregon become part of canada? canadians will know what to do with this info. in any event,as a canadian i and others that have become non residents don't qualify for health care .and this thread is about income tax. what part of that has confused you zardos?
if oregon is still part of the excited states,i promise not to try to advise you on usa income tax as i know nada about it.

Ok Pedro

What makes you think I have not lived in Canada. I have. I lived in Quebec when I was young. Provinces and states both have income taxes
and they basically work the same. All I did is point out that Canada or US you can jeopardize your state/province health insurance as an
example on how to be careful filling out a part time resident form or an expat form. You didn't point it out Pedro someone should.

As a Canadian living in another section of Mexico, I am wondering why this topic is in Lake Chapala? Is this the only area we Canadians are allowed to live? If so, I guess I best start packing as I believe in following the rules.

i put it there because that's where i live and since you and zardos have no interest in it, i will not post anymore about income tax paying alternatives to canada. go to government of canada website for more info on your own.
is quebec part of canada actually, zardos? i have better things to do than mess with you two-gracias!

Thanks for the information.

I found Bob C´s post outlining some aspects of non-residency with respect to Canadians to be useful as well. (see link below)

Obviously people have to do their own research and cost benefit analysis but, the way I see it, the more info the better.

Keep it coming everyone. I´ll try to do the same when I can.

Whoops! My reply disappeared.... What I tried to say was:

I'm glad that my information was useful.

Something I would add to it is that if the only Canadian income one has is OAS and/or CPP, the chances of getting some or all of the witholding tax back are pretty good.

You have to download the non-resident tax return from the CRA website and submit it by the end of June. That's the good news. The bad news is that if you miss the deadline, there is no going back. You have lost your chance for that tax year.

Full disclosure: the form, or at least the calculations, are a bit of a bear and there is no software I'm aware of to do it for you.

In our case, anyway, after several years (3?) the CRA advised the various pension authorities to stop or reduce the witholding tax. I believe you still have to keep filing, though. You might find that they reverse their instructions about the witholding, but I don't know that for sure.

Here's another more general but perhaps useful link for Canadians retiring abroad:
