Bus Cancelations

You may want to double check you travel plans if you are planning on taking a BUS to or from Michoacán as many routes have been canceled until further notice due to hijackings

This ongoing and disruptive situation with the students at Tiripetío needs to be dealt with properly. (Not that I know what properly would look like.) These kids have been a threat on the Morelia - Pátzcuaro highway for years. As much as three years ago, they attacked a passenger bus, forced the passengers off onto the highway, and burned the bus. I saw it happen and was fortunate not to be held there by the students.

They are crazed, asking for admission for everyone regardless of qualifications when there is no space in that branch of the university, asking for concessions from the administration, and generally disrupting student and faculty life as well as the lives of people driving past on the highway. They blockade the road and force flyers onto the stopped cars.

IMHO they all need a spanking.

It´s the usual problem with La Raza: pressure the government by affecting third parties and property. We just can´t get it in our heads that the rest of the citizens are not responsible if we don´t get what we want from the government. Civics has been thrown out the window aside from common sense. The laws are in place but are rarely enforced. When they are enforced the government usually #"!!! it up by sending in the riot police with sidearms and then some bone head pulls the trigger and all hell brakes loose. This is just great for the little tourism that dares visit the state.

Still no bus service.......

The normalistas (teachers' college students) in Tiripetío, Michoacán (just off the highway between Morelia and Pátzcuaro) are demanding--in addition to the usual admission for everyone--free bus service. They kidnapped 17 bus drivers and held them for several days, freeing them Wednesday night. As of Thursday night, they had also kidnapped 27 long-distance buses of various companies and were holding them until their demands were met. The students have armed themselves with rocks and sticks; as far as has been reported, no guns have been evidenced.

No Morelia-bound buses are running in Michoacán. Friends who held tickets to go from both Guanajuato and Guadalajara to Morelia are unable to travel. People are stranded in the TAM (the Morelia bus station), which normally has approximately 800 incoming/outgoing buses per day.

I haven't read the papers yet this morning, but as of yesterday this student insanity was costing the bus companies enormous amounts of money, not to mention destroying whatever tourism Michoacán still enjoyed.

The Economic loses for the transportation companies are estimated at almost 20 Thousand pesos per day for each stopped bus

I live in Morelia. The local newspapers are all reporting that an agreement was reached between the government and the students this afternoon. The stolen buses have apparently been returned, the main bus station in Morelia has reopened, and normal bus routes are now resuming throughout Michoacán.

Yes, it's over. The released buses are being serviced and will return to operation on Saturday. Additional buses will be added to some runs to clear the backlog of stranded passengers,
The students seem to have gotten little of what they wanted -- an increase in tuition was postponed. That was about all.

I just read in El Universal that those students who graduate this year will be guaranteed a teaching position, which was another one of their demands.
