si yo fuera mujer

This might sound obvious, until you look up 'fuera'. Subject of friendly debate...help Sergio...what does it mean? From a song covered by 5ta Estacion.
Gracias,
M

Sergio might be a better bet, but if I were translating that song title to English, it would be "If I were a woman".

Fuera is the past subjunctive of the verb ser, so in this sentence it means were and expresses an imaginary situation. The person singing this line is obviously not a woman. It's rather like the song from Fiddler on the Roof, which begins If I were a rich man, which is sung by Tevye, a poor man.

Thanks for the more comprehensive explanation, La Isla. I'm a bit weak on exact grammatical terminology, so your explanation is welcomed (by me, at least).

A sus órdenes, Sr. mazbook1. In another life I was a Spanish teacher, so these explanations come easily to me

The singer is Natalia Jimenez and the group (one of my faves) originally hails from Spain. If my take, "if I were a woman" is referring to a type of woman (self-respecting self-sufficient) that would stand up to men.

Si yo fuera mujer a mi no m tocaban
yo me tendría q querer
Si yo fuera mujer no me casaría

Greetings, I do agree with, La Isla, in the term. I just want to point out that there is another connotation for the word, 'fuera' in Spanish, if somebody is telling you, ' a fuera de aqui', they are telling you, to get the hell out of here, or that something is locate it, or happening out of the location in which you are standing, Gerry Zaragemca
