recommendations for Chiapas?

Hello, we are driving thru Chiapas at Christmas and would like to spend 1-2 weeks seeing the best of that area. Went to Palenque last year but have not seen much else of Chiapas. Planning to go to San Cristobal, but not Tuxtla. Any recommendations on what to see, where to stay, etc. We are adventurous types. Also appreciate any ideas on short term house/apt. rental or anything with kitchen facilities in San Cris or around. Any help is appreciated. Thank you, Amy

We loved Chiapas, including Tuxtla Gutierez, which has a good zoo. The boat ride from Chiapa de Corzo through the Sumidero Canyon is nice, and the little museum in Chiapa de Corzo was also worth the time. There was a restaurant in Tuxtla with folkloric dancing and good food, don't miss it.

San Christobal is a good base for a few days, and interesting in itself.

The Indian villages are interesting, but don't take pictures without permission, and I think that you would get more out of it with a tour. (We visited villages with and without tours, so can speak from experience).

Remember that Chiapas is still a troubled area, and it would be wise to solicit local advice before getting off the beaten path, adventurous or not.

We enjoyed a day trip to Agua Azul, bring your swimming suit.

I forgot to mention that the highlands of Chiapas are surprisingly cold that time of year. It was also wet. We were also there at Christmas. One lady told me about a visit where she got so cold that she had to leave San Christobal! We were in a pretty good hotel, and had an electric heater in the room. Ask if the room has heat! Bring warmer clothes than you would expect, avoid cotton in that climate.
