driving with Mexican-plated vehicle in US-big problem?

I just noticed(don't ask)that my plates have '11 on them and the sticker in window has 2011 on it. Since I'm going to be driving to New York City and remaining there for about 3 months I am concerned about being stopped because I have "expired plates". I know(now)in Mexico they don't replace plates every year but you have to get your "registration" card updated. So if stopped in Mexico a Mexican officer will understand the system of how the registration cards are what show that you are up to date.

However, I see on my registration card-"tarjeta de circulation"-that there is NO EXPIRATION DATE on the card!!!! What IS on the card is the "fecha de expedicion", or the date that you GOT the card. Now in Mexico that is ok-cops know the system.
But what about US officers who look at the card and see no expiration date for your registration??

Any ideas on how I can convince US officers of the law that this is just how they do it in Mexico? That the registration expires one year from the date of receiving it(it's a very *&?!!cked up way of doing it in my opinion but that is the way it's done).

Should I have some kind of letter from, for example, my insurance company in Mexico or maybe the US Consul General explaining the system in writing to show the cops.

I just know I'm going to be stopped and maybe even towed if parked on my street if a cop sees 2011 MEXICAN plates and have to have a way of dealing with this.

Thanks for any advice!

I wouldn't be surprised if you get pulled over more than once. Make sure your papers are in order. NY State is broke and police are writing as many tickets as they possibly can.

Your sticker needs to be 2012.
