First-hand experience turning in temporary vehicle import permit?

Looking to hear some first-hand experiences turning in the temporary vehicle import permit, (at the border, while heading back north).
There has been lots of discussion and speculation over the winter, about things such as having a different visa number, due to flying out over the winter, it taking a while to get deposits put back on cards, them not having enough cash in the drawer to refund the deposit and asking folks to come back the next day...
Anyone actually lose their deposit yet?
Any and all accounts welcomed!
