Where to stop and spend 1 night while driving through Mexico

Where's a good spot to stop and spend one night, while driving through Mexico, between Mazatlan and Laredo Texas?
Hotel and city recommendations are welcome!

Torreon looks to be a good midway point, what do you think?

Also after day 2 of driving, do you think we'll be able to cross into the US that evening, or should we wait until morning?
Not sure if this has an effect but it might be on a Sunday, and we have some business to take care of at the border, (turning in temp import permit, etc.)

While Torreon used to be an overnight stopping point for us both heading south and again heading north, you couldn't pay us enough to even think about it now. Way too many incidents these days! I am guessing that you meant Mazatlan and we have never driven that route and don't have any suggestions. Maybe Saltillo?

I have driven this route twice--the last time in July 2009---both times in a single, long day. I wouldn't recommend that because it involves some driving in the dark.

Torreon and Saltillo are the two options. I would opt for Saltillo, but not for security reasons associated with Torreon. There is plenty of narco-related activity in every area along that route, although it is not directed towards people in transit.

If you leave Mazatlan at first light you can get to Saltillo before dark, particularly if DST is in effect. You can get to Nvo. Laredo in less than 4 hours from Saltillo. Since I doubt Laredo is your final destination, you can continue on to north of Austin or to the Houston area if you are headed in that direction.

Thanks for the advice and thanks for taking me seriously!

I posted a similar question in a few different forums, and can you believe on Fodor's, they thought I was joking about this drive, and likened it to suggesting I was going carpet-shopping in Kabul?!?!?!?

Fodor might be expressing concern about the road you will driving on. I don't know how much of the new road is open so things may have changed. When I made the drive from Laredo to Matzatlan a few years ago, much of the road was mountian switchbacks and narrow. Exciting, maybe, but it would keep you awake.
