Goodyear Recalls 41,000 Tires for Potential Tread Separation
Posted Feb 27th 2012 5:59PM
I had a set of these on my 2005 Tahoe. so I figured that maybe some folks here have a set also, os I thought I would pass this recall along. (Credit for article to AOL Autoblog).
Goodyear is recalling 40,914 Wrangler Silent Armor tires manufactured in 2009. According to the manufacturer, the tread may separate from the rest of the tire under "severe conditions," which could lead to vehicle damage or an accident. The company says that it first recognized an issue with the light truck and SUV tires after an increase in warranty claims in 2010. In 2011, two people in a vehicle equipped with Silent Armor tires died in a rollover crash in Texas.

The company said the tire had sustained external damage prior to the incident, and in most cases of failure, the tires were either underinflated, overloaded or had suffered impact damage.

While 27,000 of the tires are believed to be still in service, Goodyear decided to move forward with a recall on February 16. Owners will be notified of the campaign by March 22, and the company will replace the tires free of charge.

National Highway Traffic Safety AdministrationSummary:
GOODYEAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN WRANGLER SILENT ARMOR TIRES, SIZES LT235/80R17 LRE, LT325/60R18 LRE, LT275/70R18 LRE, LT265/70R17 LRE, LT245/75R17 LRE, AND LT285/70R17 LRD, PRODUCED FROM THE 9TH WEEK OF 2009, THROUGH THE 22ND WEEK OF 2009 (MARCH 31ST THROUGH MAY 31ST). THESE TIRES MAY EXPERIENCE A PARTIAL TREAD AREA SEPARATION UNDER CERTAIN SEVERE USAGE CONDITIONS.

Consequence:
PARTIAL TREAD SEPARATION COULD LEAD TO VEHICLE DAMAGE WHEN THE SEPARATED TREAD STRIKES THE VEHICLE. A TREAD SEPARATION COULD ALSO CAUSE A TIRE FAILURE THAT COULD RESULT INA MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy:
GOODYEAR WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE TIRES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MARCH 22, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT GOODYEAR AT 1-800-592-3267.

Notes:
OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

Sorry, and I know you like to make posts but...what does this have to do with Mexico.? ExPats in Mexico may have these tires and therefore they need to drive to the US to see if they can make a claim? A recall in the US is not a recall in Mexico.

Ironically, I just had one separate just 2 weeks ago - where an 8 inch section of tread opened-up:

" The company said the tire had sustained external damage prior to the incident, and in most cases of failure, the tires were either underinflated, overloaded or had suffered impact damage. "

Since topes are ubiquitous here, and every time we go traveling through the pueblos I get surprised by at least one - the issue of impact damage is a biggie for vehicles in Mexico.

The consequences of a high-speed blow-out or complete tread failure on a front tire can be a rolled vehicle (from the metal rim biting the pavement). I have a friend who's been paralyzed from her mid back down due to a front tire failure while driving off an interstate off-ramp. Paraplegia of a loved one is not worth running defective bad tires.

If Goodyear is recalling them as an extreme safety hazard - owners of the Wranglers here in Mexico are well advised to junk their existing Wranglers - at least as front tires - and replace them with safe tires. Realize that even if you run them as back tires, you may find yourself stranded if a rear Wrangler fails during a trip, because Wranglers are typically quite large tires and not available in small towns - also if a back tire blows on a curve on a gravel road you likely find yourself in a ditch.

Robt,
Thank you for the good update.

Best to change your Wranglers, now - (even without being re-imbursed by a recall), because sometimes it really is not "all about the money".

Number one your cutting remarks are not appreciated. If you had an ounce of comprehension you might just think . . . . you remember with that thing on the top of your shoulders, that some folks do buy their tires NOB, as I happen to have done.

Number Two: The warranty does cover folks living in México, If you purchased your tires NOB. Sometimes whynotwrite, you are “so heavenly minded you are no earthly good!” Try some positive comments if you do not have any, then I suggest you might want to stop showing your ignorance, as believe it or not, you really do not know it all!

The recall was honored in Mexico and I had my tires replaced for free in Guadalajara.

I see it as a useful warning to those people who may have the tires on their vehicles and may not receive recall notices for those tires. At least they have the chance to change their tires in Mexico and protect their lives at the same time. Let's give a little leeway here.

Sorry but doing the math that comes out to about 10,250 cars in the ENTIRE USA that´s getting a recall. OR if you prefer, 20,000 cars that changed only a set of two tires. Out of millions of cars on the road...And what are the odds of a set coming to Mexico. ? That is my ounce of comprehension.
P.S. you probably didn´t even buy Goodyears.

robt65: Just ignore that fellow! Thank you for posting that info. If some knew how Goodyear operates they would realize that there are probably other tires not included in the recall with the same problem. When they do recalls often it will only be issued for tires that have complaints. For instance they may make the identical tire with a different name and not recall that tire. After having a Goodyear tire blow up on our MH in Mexico I can only say that I will NEVER buy a GY tire again. Even in Mexico there are lots of choices for better tires. GY's customer service is horrible. They usually deny any claims and tell you that the tire was either damaged or underinflated. Robt: I enjoy your posts. Like I posted not long ago this forum is getting very bad. I wish the trouble makers would just go away.

robt65 - I appreciate the original post. I have a car here we brought from Florida. Anyone can choose NOT to read something here while the rest might learn something. I had this happen to the minivan we drove here (in the same year you and I were in contact and on the road at the same time as we both crossed the border that summer). Obviously you get it that many cross in from NOB to the SOB IN CARS. After the tread separated (with 4 kids in the minivan at the time), we purchased another set of goodyear tires and it happened AGAIN months later! So now (thanks to this post of yours) we know what is going on as I never heard of a recall since coming here. Thank you!

Interesting:
3 of the Mexconnect posters have had significant - premature - failure of large Goodyear tires - and had to replace them.

Just this small sampling of expats would seem to say that Robt65's notice on problems with Goodyear tires is both valid and useful.

Thanks Robt,
steve
