Yesterday during the first period of the AFC playoffs we lost all our local stations from our Dish feed (New York City). This would be channels 2 thru 13. All other channels work as usual. The locals still have not been restored. I've reset, downloaded a new program guide , and checked my signal strength , and switches, which are all good. I pay my bill on time and am current. Does anyone know what may have happened? I use (3) 1.5 meter dishes pointed at 61.5, 110, & 119. My signal stengths are 72, 73, & 40 respectively. My DISH box is a VIP 622 DVR

Our local satellite TV providers here in Merida have talked about 119W having issues with signal stability. They say that since 119W is wobbling, Dish may have to replace it.

Since you have only 1.5m dishes, it's possible that your dish aimed at 119W is just barely big enough to receive the signals from the transponders that supply your 119W NYC channels, where a little satellite wobble might cause your signal strength to drop too much on weak transponders, and then return later. It's also possible that your 119W dish's position needs to be tweaked, as it might have moved due to wind?

I question the dish size, because we're using a 1.8m dish for 119W and there are some transponders (esp. 10 & 11) that we can't get, while a 2.4m dish brings in the same transponders very well.

Check the signal strength for transponder 20, since that's the one that bring in your NYC local channels. We're getting a Dish Network signal strength of 35 with slight clouds today on transponder 20. http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish119.html

On a different matter: Do you get all the 61.5W transponders with your 1.5m dish? We're thinking of shifting from 119W to 61.5W.

Odd signal behavior here too on the West Coast, just north of Puerto Vallarta. Over the past month or so, 199 occasionally just goes out or gets very weak, but then signal returns. Using 1.5 dish and "normal" signal strengths on 119 are in the 30 - 40 range. Have not had major issues with receiving NYC locals.

I checked a friend's Dish system yesterday, and he has all the NYC Dish channels that he's had with his package in the past.

Dish Network has their 119W signals adjusted to give only very weak signals here in Yucatan, so, as you go further east, (like PV vs. Merida vs. Cancun), the 119W signals generally get weaker.

I got back 2-CBS, 7-ABC, 4-NBC, & 5 NYW, chs. 9 & 11 are still gone.

I have 3 antennas each pointed at a different bird. These are my signal strengths:

I've been having some of the same issues here on the West Coast of Mexico, specifically with the CNN feed. No problems with the NYC stations though, but they are now located up at 8100+ on the program channels.

Anyone know the Transponder # for CNN and HLN?

When the signal is not strong enough, simply get a larger Ku band dish. Most folks only have a 2.4 meter or 8 foot dish, lakeside. Why not go to a 12 footer. The signal strength is more than twice that of an 8 footer. The problem I have with Dish is that the satellites are not very close to each other, you know 110 degrees West, 119, 129 and at 61.5. And you can not use multiple LNBs on the same satellite dish.

DirecTV has three very close satellites, so close to each other that you can use one satellite dish with three LNBs. How can they do this? By using both Ku and K or Ka frequencies very close to each other. The satellite dishes are located at 99.2 101, and 102.8 degrees West.

Yes the central satellite is at 101 W and the other two are 1.8 degrees less and 1.8 degrees more. How can these satellites be so close? Because the center one is at Ku frequencies and the other two are at much higher frequencies. See http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/america.html for more information.

Those using DirecTV here lakeside are much more satisfied than those using DISH USA.

Me, I like Shaw Direct best, because it gives me my home town stations from Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria, and all I need is the larger elliptical Shaw sat dish which measures only 36.5 by 26.5 inches and has almost no signal loss during the rainy season.

What is really nice about it is, it gives me TV coverage, when I'm up north and here in Mexico

I'm sorry to heard that but your provider is not correct. Sat 119 is almost new and it doesn't have any problems at all. We use a 1.80 mts here in Guadalajara without any issue.

Why don't you try to reaim your dish or put a new lnb?

Yes redevil66, the satellite at 119 West is almost new. But along with being new is that it is better able to focus it's footprint on the US with less bleed-over into Mexico, etc. than the satellite it replaced. And even with a 2.4 meter dish some transponders don't have that much strength this far south, especially during rainy periods (Lake Chapala)

And also as you point out, sadly with time, sometimes our sat dishes need to be re-adjusted (Bore-sited in).

Yeah We have a mess here with rain but we have good foot print with a 1.80 mt antenna. You need a good quality antenna and lnb and a good aiming work. I always use a birdog with all my instalations. btw If you have problems with 119 you can put 61.5 insted.

Yes, I have a good friend whose using 61.5 lakeside. He it likes it better.

I had dish for many years. But now with digital Telecable and Shaw Direct, also having DISH was an overkill, so I sent back my leased DISH receiver to DISH from my address of record, up north.

If I didn't have Shaw, I would go DirecTV using one 2.4 meter satellite dish and 3 hot LNBs pointed at the three birds mentioned above

61.5 only have sd channels and you only can have it with a mpg4 receiver. In the other hand you are right with Directv option but you most know that you need to have a good reception in trasp 31 on 101 satellite otherwise you don´t have any channel!

Edit. On another forum someone was looking for an oil cloth, and I didn't know what it was.

Reference, DirecTV, I only know that those I have talked to lakeside who gave up DISH for DirecTV are getting a good signal and are very safisfied here along the shores of Lake Chapala, using an 8 foot dish with hot LNBs

In all your years in the PNW, can you guess how many times you have seen oilcloth sails on sailboats, waterproof bags made from oilcloth or the biggie, people wearing oilcloth jackets for protection from the rain?

Partimers must be setting in, because I didn't remember what it was/is. And rain in Seattle? You've got to be kidding. I hardly ever see it raining there anymore.

Some prefer Directv, others prefer dish. I have both and I can tell you that Dish has better hardware than Directv. Better yet if you have Dish with iks system! lol

I have a question for you redevil66. When I was actively using DISH, I was pointing at 109, 119, and 129 W. Because the satellites were so far apart I needed three separate satellite dishes, which I have (actually counting Shaw direct, I have 5 :)

With DirecTV because the three satellites I would be interested in are very very close together, I can use one 2.4 meter or larger Sat Dish and three hot LNBs (99.2, 101, & 102.8 W)

When you were making your comparison, were you talking about all of the programming viewable on DISH using perhaps 3 satellites (perhaps using 61.5) compared with all available on the DirecTV channels one gets from the three satellites mentioned above? And was/is HD programming important to you?

Yes you can have Directv with a 2.4 m. antenna not less. I'm using 110-119-129 and I have almost the same programing in both systems. Directv has more sports but Dishnetwork has a model 722 which has 2 tunners so you can see and record two diferent shows and you can feed 2 tvs with diferent programing.

Hi all, i'm new to the forum and i read some good stuff here. I live in cancun and i'm interested on satellite 110 or 119. how big of atenna do i need to recieved any or both birds. i dont have a birddog to scan for signal, so i need help locating any bird. i really dont know witch wey to point at..

You should be able to get 110W with a 1m dish (or larger). Use Tp 6 (12297) when adjusting your dish position. Use an internet-based calculator with your latitude and longitude to give you your elevation and angle. For Merida it is at about 226º (Due South West) and 56-58º of tilt. Since you are further east, you should have to swing your dish a little more west.

119W takes at MINIMUM a high quality 1.8m dish to get almost all the channels, while a medium quality 2.4m dish get them all.
