FM2 and Foreign Car

Here is a cut and paste from a gentlemen who lives in Baja. I have always found him to be up to date on Aduana and Inmmigration items.

1 - In Baja there is no need for a TIP. We must have current registration - which we do even though in the US. The FM2 requires that we spend a certain amount of time in Mexico but does not stipulate that our vehicles must be registered in Mexico. We used a legal service here for help and our rep, who speaks excellent English, used to work for immigration.

This is the second time I have come across this information. Is Baja different? Rolly Where are you? Please excuse me for calling it FM2!

I don´t know what a TIP is and I don´t know anything about Baja specifically. But here´s from Rolly´s site which is what we go by in our daily lives. Btw, obviously, this is for the current FM2 (pending the new regs).

The car rules under an FM2 are different from an FM3. The only type of FM2 that allows you to have a foreign-plated vehicle is called Inmigrante - Rentista.

Rentista means a person who lives on his own funds. It does not mean renter although it looks like it might. There are several other classes of FM2; none will allow you to have or even drive a foreign-plated car.

This restriction does not apply to an FM3.

My website says in several places:
The rules for Baja are different. Vehicle permits are not required in Baja.
Foreign license plates must be kept current in Baja.

I don't know if the FM2 non-rentista restrictions would apply,
