A red ribbon on my new lime trees

Not new trees but have their first fruit. Nursery told me 2-3 years for fruit and they've only been in the ground for a year. My neighbor and I noticed a bunch of blossoms yesterday and he found a group of very small limones.

Among other suggestions like fertilizer ... he also suggested tying a red ribbon on the tree to protect it from the full moon. Like pregnant woman do he said.

I withhold myself when Mexicans come up with stuff like that. I found something on the color red and pregnant women with Google but had a hard time getting serious about it

Our gardener in Sonora, who was actually from the Jalisco/Michoacan borders, believed in putting red ribbons on citrus trees. It can't hurt anything so we used to go along with the idea.

I "adopted" a fruit tree from a neighbor, complete with a strip of red cloth tied to it, so I asked my gardener about it. He mumbled that it was supposed to protect it and pretty much shrugged it off. I got the impression that it was an evil eye sort of thing? But he didn't remove it, so I didn't, either.

The ribbon for pregnant women is supposed to prevent having a child born with a cleft palate. Wives' tales amongst the poorly educated.

My wife told me that pregnant women in her rancho use the red ribbon when there's a lunar eclipse and that it's common to see them on fruit trees. What about the jugs of water you see in some gardens, what are they for?

My gardener said the red ribbon will keep the fruit from falling off before ripe.

That's interesting,I have a patch of lawn between the sidewalk and the street that attracts perros callejeros for that very purpose, maybe I'll try an experiment with the jugs.

It could be an old wives tale. The ones I notice on people's grass between the sidewalk and street or fence and sidewalk are usually the 4 liter clear plastic bottles with the labels torn off, about 3/4 full and placed about 3 meters apart and sometimes on their side. It would be interesting if this actually did anything except clutter up the view.
