One of my favorite authors Paul Theroux wrote an interesting article about his recent visit to Nogales, maybe someone more computer savvy than I could post a link to it.

Wonderful story. Thank you for sharing this article.

I live about 30 minutes from the Nogales border and make a point of crossing there as often as possible to shop, eat and enjoy a bit of Mexican culture. I always find Nogales Sonora a comfortable place to visit and get my Mexico "fix" when an extended trip in to Mexico is not feasible.

Paul Theroux's books based on his travels around the world have given me endless hours of enjoyment over the years,we can't all travel by train across continents or kayak around the south pacific but his books give you a taste of what it might be like to do it.I was pleased to read his take on Nogales.

Only have had one experience in walking across the bridge at Nogales and the area immediately surrounding the bridge reminded me of doing the same in Juarez. Apples to apples comparison but those areas that immediately accessible to the Gringos from "across the way" leave me absolutely cold. When I talk to Anglos or Chicanos here in Albuquerque, 95% of their Mexico experiences and opinions are based upon that area within a mile of the bridge. They have blank looks on their faces when I try to explain to them the difference with Central or other parts of Mexico.

Yes! But I have been spoiled by the interior of Mexico which we find an enlightening and educational experience.

Well - there isn't a bridge - just a crossing.

I stand corrected! To be quite honest, I didn't enjoy the experience and to me, it wasn't Mexico as I prefer to know it.

I have spent many years living both on the border and in the interior. I honestly love them both equally. Just as some folks here on MexConnect find themselves constantly having to defend against misconceptions of friends and relatives in the USA, so did I have to try to convince my closed-minded friends and neighbors in SMA about the advantages of living in TJ.

Brian, I too loved living in Tijuana. The three-plus years I spent there were some of the best and most formative years of my adult life. I found wonderful long-term friends there, began to learn the Mexican kitchen there, and hated to leave. Tijuana was my introduction to the wonders of Mexico and I wouldn't take anything for those years.

And amen to Carnitas Uruapan. Although there are better carnitas in Michoacán, there are none better in Tijuana.

The border areas are definitely different from the interior of the country, but they are no less Mexico for all that. There are wide differences across this country, as there are in the US and Canada, but all the parts make up the country of Mexico that most of us love.

I have similar feelings about Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, the only two resort areas we have visited in recent years. It is a matter of personal preference and perception and really only applies to the two of us. Anyone else is certainly free to have more positive feelings about any area that they have visited.

Today, I found this interesting comparison between the two areas with respect to foreign tourism and real estate investment.
