Nothing really exclusive about it...

...other than there is a gate at the entrance and security guards who check all the traffic going in and out.
Like I said, we pay $600 US rent for a brand new three bedroom, three bathroom 2000 sq. foot home in a middle class gated community. Actually, that is quite reasonable here in AGS. The landlord also gave us a Newlywed discount, as we have no children and that makes us a rather valuable commodity in the rental world.
If you want to see exclusive in AGS, go to Pulgas Pandas or Club Campestre, and visit the homes on the golf course. These are the executive homes that rent for exhorbitant rates of $2000 US on up to $5000 US per month!
Our business is not lucrative right now, but there is lots of potential. It involves a lot of early mornings driving out to the ranches at 4:00 a.m. to observe cows eating or helping teach the workers on the ranch how to mix the rations correctly. Sometimes we demonstrate how to use our companies new uterine infection medication, which involves my left arm in the rear end of the cow up to my shoulder! Sounds like a real elitist lifestyle, doesn't it! ;-)
We enjoy it, and whether our new business works out well remains to be seen, but we have had good results so far!
Oh, I almost forgot; some of the reasons rents are so high here is that companies will pay whatever the asking price is for a rental with no negotiation. Another reason is that AGS is a very prosperous place, even with the economic slowdown. Also, many professionals are moving here from all over Mexico and there is even a steady stream of disgruntled professionals from Argentina.
Just totally differant from Mazatlan in almost every way.
Saludos desde Aguascalientes, Randy
______________________________________________________________________
: Wow Randy - that is a pile of money to pay on rent!! Your new business must be very lucrative! Here in Mazatlan, rentals are much lower than that. We have a fairly large, ocean view, 2 bedroom, fully furnished apartment (new furniture) for only $1500.00 Pesos a month. It was only after we had lived here a year that the landlord asked us to pay our own utilities. We think it must have been costing him money to have us live here. We are only a block and a half to the beach and everything else. I hadn't realized how expensive it is inland. You have to live in a pretty exclusive neighbourhood here to pay as much as you are paying. Just an observation, and hope you are liking it. : Marlene.
: : RL: I don't know anything at all about what the rental market is like in Zacatecas or San Luis Potosi, but I have up to the minute information on rental prices in AGS.
: : My wife and I just went through an agonizing month long search for a rental home. As we are just beginning a new business here, we didn't want to spend too much to rent a home. We were looking for a two or three bedroom home in a nice area. We had a four bedroom home lined up for $350 month in a middle income area, but at the last minute, the owner changed the price to $550 US. We didn't like the area that much (grafitti coming on) so we resumed the search, finally getting very lucky and finding a beautiful, brand new home in the area we wished for at $600 US month in a middle to middle-upper class gated community. It is a quiet community, and the extra level of security allows for a more open style of living, and the folks living there seem friendly and more or less younger like us ;-)
: : You are right about the recent influx of Chilangos and others to AGS, but at 700,000 population, it is still much more manageable and liveable than Guadalajara. Don't get me wrong, GDL is a great place to visit for an isolated Gringo, heck, it is more or less like the USA. I just would never live there. Anyway, Chilangos are having an effect on the rental prices, but Andy in Aguascalientes just rented a beautiful apartment for $300 US and you can find affordable housing in almost any part of the city except for Pulgas Pandas & Club Campestre. These areas are home to foreign executives, mostly Japanese whose companies, Nissan for example, pay whatever the asking price is. I have seen rental prices for large homes in Club Campestre at $4000 US and more! That is absolutely insane for rent.
: : Why not go to an even smaller nearby town. During our first two months in Arandas in los Altos de Jalisco, we paid $180 US for a two bedroom, brand new apartment in a mixed income neighborhood. We made some great friends who were newlyweds also, but there were a couple people living in the area who didn't respect the rest of us in the middle of the night by playing loud music, so when we had the chance, we left.
: : I am just trying to tell you that there are some excellent options outside of the big cities. Look around and don't be so exclusionary. You might try a google search for bienes raices for AGS, ZAC or SLP. Also search some online newspapers for those cities. But the best way is to make personal contacts and start walking or driving the neighborhoods that appeal to you.
: : Good luck, Randy : : ______________________________________________________________________ : : : I was hoping some posters would respond to what they know about rent prices and the availability of housing in these three cities. I am looking for either an apartment or house in the $1,500 to 3,000 pesos a month range. I was favoring Aguascalientes as a place to move to but it appears that the city is almost too popular. It appears as though a lot of people from Mexcio City and Guadalajara have moved there and consequently the rents have gone up considerably. Any thoughts on these three cities would be greatly appreciated. Thanks RL.
