How cqan I cash a rental deposit refund check in Ajujic ?

Can't Post | Private Reply
My wife and I are planning on renting for two months while we purchase a home in Ajijic.

We have found a rental we like but the catch is they want $780 USD deposit plus a $300 USD telephone deposit.

They have told us the deposits will be refunded via a Wells Fargo USD check. Our problem with that is since we are not returning to the states I don't see how we could cash it !
\
Does any one have any thoughts on how we would be able to cash this check ? We will not have a Mexican bank account.

Thanks,

Fred & Donna

Don't rent the place. Sounds like a scam. How do you jnow they'll return your deposit? If they don't you have no recourse in Mexico. Find another place.

Deposits on rentals aren't a scam, they're security, though those do seem a bit large for a two-month rental.

Since you're dealing in US dollars, it sounds you're talking about a private rental, or maybe through one of the local property management companies. Ask them if they'll give you the equivalent refund in cash, in pesos. If not, assuming you're retaining a bank account in the US, you could always mail the check back to the US with a deposit slip. There are various ways to get a piece of mail to the United States.

There are also other ways to deal with a US denominated paper check locally. It's not that big a deal.

Open an account at MultVa. You can deposit $USD checks there.

Get a lease where the deposits are in pesos equivalent to the USD amount they want and that you will receive, in pesos, the deposits when you move.

Asking a rental price in USD that is payable in pesos is legal. Demanding USD as payment isn't.

Actually I think under the Finance Code all contracts must be in pesos and paid in pesos. Vendors are not allowed to advertise stating prices in any currency but pesos and unless a contract is an international contract where one party is in another country, all currency in a contact in Mexico must be pesos.

Rents must be determined in Mexican currency (pesos).

If you are renting short term why not rent at a motel and not worry about a deposit?

http://www.hotelperico.com.mx/en/

There are several other affordable hotel/motels in the area but that solves any deposit and other upfront money.

I forgot to add the Hotel Perico advertises a rate of $300 USD a month.

why bother! we booked at los dos b&b[jocotepec] run by phylis rauch for 2 weeks until we found a rental while we looked for a house to buy. we found this house in the first week and ended staying for 2 months at los dos until closing. our unit was 2 story with kitchen like a casita. we had 2 dogs. the gardens and view is outta sight. i walked a mountain trail every morning with the dogs.
the less hassel you give yourself the better. she has internet and phone in each unit. i hooked up our vonage even. yes we bought in one week and this year we will have been in this house for 6 years.
my wife and phylis still do lunch on occasion. relax!

LOL I have not had one rental contract that didn't have six foot holes in them down here. This goes far beyond the standard English/USDsituation. Not sure any contract I have signed would hold up in court down here. Deposit is security. Lease is a piece of paper to me. Z

If you are going to buy in the area, why not open a local bank account? We do most of our banking through our US bank but have found it convenient to have an account here as well.
