"When In Guanatos, You Can't Always Speak The Way Locals Do"

I've never been to Guadalajara, but I can tell you I never wear shorts out on the street where I live, in Mexico City. Even on very warm days, the only people I see in shorts in my neighborhood are a very few young Mexican women who want to show off their legs and gringo tourists who don't mind being labeled as such. But that's just me : ) . You can wear whatever attire makes you happy!

Chris:

That was a bit of an inside joke and potshot at me. Back in January, Steve picked us up at GDL (yes the airport) and delivered us to Tlaquepaque. We were sitting at the El Patio having an arrival drink and he suddenly exclaimed that it was the very first time in four years that he had seen me in "big boy pants". Only because, it had been 28 degrees in Albuquerque when we flew out at 6:30am.

It's an old saw, the clothes police think we offend the local folk by wearing anything less than burkas as near as I can tell. The same folks who are afraid to change, or imagine change in anything around us, but refuse to see we change many things daily just by being in the country.

Similarly, it irks me when I hear or see "Patz" for "Pátzcuaro", but what can you do?

What I did was to use text expanding software, so I merely have to type "pptz" and press a hot key and BOOM! Pátzcuaro!

I don't find it at all difficult to pronounce these mellifluous names in full.

(I thought I'd better get in my 2 centavos before this thread is locked.)

Saludos,

OK, the dog show thread provided the inspiration. Quickly, how does one pronounce the mellifluous "Xoloitzcuintli"?

You got it Rick, I gave it my best shot twice, no results, guess I've lost my touch, maybe it will just wander off and die on it's own.

Which ironically in this case (thread) is commonly shortened to escuincle which is also a slang term for children.

From the nahuatl (not Spanish) word itzcuintli.

My 6 year old son does not like the term escuincle at all.

We have 2 xoloitzcuintli and most people refer to them as xolitcuintli, once in a while someone will shorten the word but it is not comon. We hear the full name almost daily on the street. We also hear perro original and perro azteca.
