Here's a new one on me, in TX we're happy if we can get a schefflera to grow 6' tall, here I have several next to the house that are now over the 2nd story roof and I looked out the other day and one is blooming? - who knew. The bloom is probably at least 4' across, it's huge.

It definitely surprised me. I took a couple of pics a few minutes ago with flash and in the morning I'll add them to the page, so check back tomorrow. The poor thing was fighting it's way up through the Jacaranda, so I cut away everything around and above it to give it a chance.

Right now I'm still fighting Telmex and can barely upload so hopefully in the morning it will be better.

Banana plants die after they fruit, it is totally normal, usually another or several other plants come out so you just cut the plant that is dyeing and go on to the next one. Sa,e with

The people in Oaxaca use banana leaves for their tamales as well as the corn husk and so do they in Chiapas.

I had no clue about the banana plants! Thats kinda sad, like sacrificing themselves to make yummy fruit ;)

Tamales here in Yucatan are all made with banana leaves, I think they are more commonly used for cooking in the tropics everywhere. There is one guy here in Merida that makes what are called Mexican tamales and he sells them in the evenings from the street near one of the glorietas. There is always a line of cars waiting to buy them. I go occasionally because it is nice to have something different. I just wish someone sold corundas from Michoacan around here, they are my favorite tamales.

They are the typical tamales of Michoacan. The ones I loved were sold in front of the church in Patzcuaro and were covered in crema fresca. Light and airy triangles of masa with I think rajas in the dough.

Its the start of the rainy season here... My baby seedlings have grown quickly indoors and are almost ready for planting out!

This year we have:
Yellow pear and red cherry tomatoes.
Jalapeno
Starvos pepper (which I was told is used to make pepperocinis?)
Bell pepper of colorful variety
Basil - thai, lemon and sweet
DILL

I am hemming and hawing about whether I should go ahead and attempt some lettuce and swiss chard and radishes now (since according the the almanac it wont get over 80 here very often) or wait a couple more months.

Anyone an expert on supposed cool season veggies and know the weather in (northern) DF? Would building a shade cloth/frame help grow those plants now or should I wait?

Pictures to come in the next couple days, they are just wittle plants still but fun to share anyway.

Anyone else change their garden or have any new developments this season?

I haven’t been able to find kale anywhere, so I took advantage of a recent short trip to Canada to sm*ggle, I mean bring some kale seed. The trial sowing has just sprouted. I hope the plants survive my black thumb and flourish.

Hehe. Um, thats where all my seeds came from (well, different country by indeed NOTB) except red cherry tomatos which I found at Chedraui(and they also have at Home depot) .

So, nowI am kicking myself. I didnt plant kale because everyonetold me if I planted it now it would bolt - but it honestly doesnt get THAT hot here in Mexico City/Estado de Mexico. Right? Lt me know how yours grows, I have been craving this Kale, pomegranate and bacon salad I saw on a blog somewhere.

I do have several lettuce, kale, spinach, swiss chard varieties and a radish that I havent planted yet... Was waiting because everyone told me too!
