Yes Rolly. That's called unlocking and in the past we would bring iPhones down and pay a fee of maybe 400 pesos to get someone here to do it. It looks like you found a way to do it for free. :)

I simply bought a new unlocked iPhone 4 and brought it down. They are now available in both Canada and the USA unlocked and a new one, the 4S costs about $650 US/ Canadian plus tax.(At least that is what the new iPhone 4 cost last summer)

With your tip many older and much more economical iPhones that are locked could be brought down and unlocked for free. Great information.

Ok then, I have the new AT&T Iphone 4s and my old Telcel phone with my Telcel number still active. Can I keep my Telcel number I have had for years and change to the Iphone???? Also how does the back open? I was told the Iphone has a sim card but it may be a different size. Advice?

I have the Telcel Amigo Plan. I had a medium priced phone here in Mexico, but bought a then new, unlocked iPhone 4 from an Apple store up north (available in both the US and Canada).

My old SIM chip was too large, so they (the local Telcel office) trimmed it down and it is working well in my iPhone. So in my case, everything is the same. So, yes, it can be done, and is being done by many of my friends.

And when you buy the new iPhone 4s, you are given a key (pin) which allows you to get inside said phone

Thanks again Pete, I am glad I can keep my old number. Do you use someone local to change over? Also in the States I have to have plan for the phone, another for the data, another for the messageing. Does the Amigo plan allow for the data?

I ain't got no pin. I just double checked the box it was shipped in. I am sure someone there has one.

I didn't bring my pin with me to the Telcel office next to the Casino in Ajijic. They have one, and the folks there, were the ones who cut my chip for me. And yes, the Amigo plan allows for data. But I try to use WiFi whenever I can, to save money.

In the states because I have a land line, I don't exchange chips and use a plan up there. But when I use my Telcel connection in the USA, or Canada, the roaming charges are terribly terribly high. I think about $20-$25 pesos per minute.
