Brian:

From my readings, apparently rumors have been running rampant in Michoacán:

In reviewing messages on a Michoacán message board this morning, there was a great deal of chatter about the schools and shops being closed in the cities or towns around Lake Patzcuaro.

An additional factor may just be the fact that something like 80% of the teachers are holding some sort of strike?

Hi Neil

Thousands of troops rushed to Michoacan. Somebody took the rumors pretty seriously. There are those who think that Elba Esther is Public Enemy #1 in Mexico but I doubt any actions she could undertake would garner that much attention.

What I read in today's DF newspaper El Universal is that the government is trying to head off a confrontation in the Tierra Caliente between two rival cárteles, La Familia Michoacana and the Caballeros Templarios. Who knows.

This just in: http://www.washingtonpost.com/...IQAIiEjlQ_story.html

Again, who knows.

Actually, it wasn't the same ole same ole at all.

In fact, it wasn't anything at all. The Washington Post made the same mistake a lot of other media made that day and wrote an article that was based on troop movements into Michoacán, nothing more.

In general, mass hysteria (known in the Mexican press as psicosis) prevailed all over Michoacán that day. Businesses in Pátzcuaro and Morelia closed down due to fear, schools were closed, etc--and all based on nothing.

The biggest thing in Michoacán that day was a teachers' march in Morelia.

What turned out to be worse are the public protests that have put Morelia in a stranglehold. We didn´t count on these "other mafias".

It's an old tradition, wearechange. Marches and protests in Morelia truly ARE same ole same ole.

Morelia, Oaxaca, and the Distrito Federal have long been Mexico's three most notorious cities for chaotic, mind-boggling, road-blocking demonstrations.

So true. The day we stop seeing these roadblocking protests and the day I walk down the street and nobody throws their trash on the sidewalk I will be tempted to say Mexico is changing. Not gonna hold my breath, though.
