This sounds like a robbery that got out of control but because it involves Americans it gets attention. Actually very little of what happens regularly along the border gets reported outside the immediate area, like the series of incidents that have taken place in Reynosa, Matamoros and central Tamaulipas over the last week. We had a pretty serious incident last Friday in Nvo. Laredo that wasn't reported anywhere outside of Laredo and McAllen. There is alot more to report than they do for whatever the reason.

I suppose as killings of foreigners in Mexico become commonplace, less attention will be paid to them as well. Your description of this event as an out of control robbery rather than murder is indicative of our needing increasing violence or cruelty before becoming shocked. In all my years associated in some way with the country, I just don't remember so many instances as in the past couple of years. And most are not drug-related. Two of my former areas of residence have seen murders of Americans and Canadians well out of proportion to their numbers in the community including, but not limited to, San Miguel de Allende and Tijuana/Rosarito.

Well, then the solution is simple, with due respect, return to the US or CA where murders and crime don't exist. I live life as a rack of clothes, you try something on and if you look good in it and it feels good, wear it, if not, take it off and move on. We are the most privileged generation of non-elite, non-royalty ever seen in the worlds history, we can come and go as we please, if you don't like FL, move to Toronto, if not, move to Ajijic, no one stands in our way, yet we are probably the greatest generation of whiners in the history of mankind and I don't exclude myself at times.

Mexico is what it is and no amount of hand wringing is going to change it, only the people of MX and that's an evolutionary process, NOT revolutionary so in our lifetimes it's not going to suddenly become paradise and if that's not within our ability to accept, then "take it off and move on".

Mexico is what it is and no amount of hand wringing is going to change it, only the people of MX and that's an evolutionary process, NOT revolutionary so in our lifetimes it's not going to suddenly become paradise and if that's not within our ability to accept, then "take it off and move on".

Maybe a lot of the people doing the hand-wringing are the ones who thought that Mexico was "paradise" before they moved here. And, of course, it wasn't paradise in the first place.

First, que Dios les bendiga. May God Bless them. I´m sure this couple are with God now because they meant well. But, for others.....

I don´t mean to be indelicate, but, what are Christian missionaries doing in Mexico? It is a Catholic country and, the last time I looked, Catholics are Christian, not heathens in need of conversion.

On Monterrey TV this morning it was reported that the couple were counseling drug addicts as part of their ministry. The police believe some of the men they were counseling were responsible, for what that's worth.

Please see my post "When Violence comes close to your Mexican Home" in Mexconnect Living and working in Mexico. Maybe Brian is starting to see a pattern here like I do with this crime spree that he is always commenting on and then criticizing the Republica when they actually catch the perpetrators with all his human rights nonsense. What do most of the incidents have in common. Read through them if your interested. Let's see if anyone else sees a pattern here. Hint. Its not the Drug Cartels.

I know a Missionary here in Ensenada. When ever I see him I greet him with, "I am so glad that you are still alive." He is just not Mexico material. He's thinks he is under somebody's protection with his faith driven desires. It is much better to be sight driven and be aware and enlightened that he is just as likely to get hammered as anybody else by not being careful who he lets into his life. With me, it is all about choice, and he makes very bad ones and doesn't learn or listen to anybody. His life is constant calamity. He is a terrible judge of character. He has had a least two Bad Auto accidents. His employees are always stealing from him. Of course they're stealing from you when your out putting on you Moses suit, trying get converts. You have to be there. This is weakness to them. You are either a Business man or a Priest in Mexico. You can do both.

I haven't read your posts in the other forum regarding crime, but it is no secret (at least to the Mexican public) that there is a rapidly growing problem with substance abuse in the country, particularly cocaine and crystal meth. The local market is known as the narcomenudeo, and PGR through the Federal attorney general attributes much of the increased narco violence to turf wars over the control of the local drug market.

It wouldn't surprise me if the killing of the Canadian in Melanque, the murder of the retired New York lawyer in the Lakeside area and now the incident involving the missionaries were robberies committed by drug users in need of cash. The victims resist and the perp overreacts.

Of course, if something can be tied to the "drug war" in even the most peripheral way, it will be (and sometimes -- maybe often -- is true). I have noticed that when rehabs (and rehab workers) are targeted by gangsters, they are from clinics run by small evangelical protestant groups. I really hadn't paid attention, til I saw mention of a rehab burned down in Lima Peru, which was also run by a small Protestant sect.

I don't know if this means if anything... other than the state, Catholic Church and pricey U.S. style facilities are doing a better job protecting their workers and clients. Some have suggested these rehabs are used by gangsters as a place to hide out from rivals -- and the staff sometimes get targeted as a result.

In the south, Protestant missionaries are sometimes seen as either a threat to group solidarity or agents of neo-liberal imperialism, and Protestants sometimes come to grief. In the north, more likely just to be seen as gringos. These latest victims may have been targeted as somehow a threat to the drug trade, as interlopers, as imperialists, or maybe they were just victims of a crime of opportunity... could be anything.

It was a description about why I think the murders probably happened nothing more. I suspect the primary motive was robbery--the out of control part was an educated guess.

I seriously doubt these people were targeted by the Zetas for some reason related to cartel business or that there was some political motive behind the killings. The comments in the article about narco-violence in Nuevo Leon was just a lead-in and lazy reporting. The event wouldn't have been reported outside Monterrey media if the victims hadn't been U.S. citizens.

It seems to be a break-in and robbery turned ugly.

When the editor needs 300 words, the reporter will find some type of filler and in this case, it is a tie-in with the narco-violence.

If they had been Canadian, it would have appeared in every on-line paper in Canada and on every on-line forum in Canada and Mexico.
