Interesting article containing some major errors. It's easy to own a firearm for home protection. No "10,000 permit" required.

Gun laws in Mexico are more honored in their breach than observance. When I lived in Baja, in particular, I was told by more than one Mexican neighbor that a firearm is located in most households. I didn't know one gringo resident who had one though. I guess they were more worried about getting deported than getting killed. That was then...this is now.

Try getting ammo on the open market, though. Yeah, there are plenty of guns around, but outside of those "imported" from the U.S. by our "free-market entrepreneurs" (and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) most of what I've seen away from places with easy access to the United States are things like old Guatemalan Army weapons or hunting rifles. As it is, this was hardly a story about Mexico, the country, but about northern Chihuahua... No surprise that the LeBaron Colony is well-armed, most of the residents being dual citizens who regularly go back and forth to the land of the paranoid and the home of cheap guns.

Oh please. Guns of all kinds have been available here since before you became to Mexico. The ones that came across the border via the ATF are just a drop in the bucket.

Thanks for confirming what I said... one way or another, the NPR story is overblown. Either guns are readily available to those who want them (in which case no one is "turning to guns") or newer weapons are mostly imported from the U.S. and obviously more likely to be found among those with easy access to the United States.

I agree that the ATF-supplied weapons are only a minor part of the stream, and the attention focused on "fast and furious" is meant to deflect criticism of the unregulated exports. Not having much interest in obtaining firearms, nor spending my time with the kinds of people who do, what I have not in the hands of cops and criminals are older weapons.

Try googling Ervil Le Baron from the Le Baron Colonia,he's a good argument for stricter gun laws IMO.BTW I have no problem with responsible people owning firearms,I wish I could have one here in GDL.

You are right,it's the paperwork and hassles that I'd rather not deal with,I'll stick with my speargun and machete,no permits required.

The age of the weapons isn't a factor. A Vietnam era M-16 is just as lethal as an AR-15 fabricated in 2009. My 1911 .38 super will kill you as easy as a 9mm Glock.
