Thanks for confirming what I said... one way or another, the NPR story is overblown. Either guns are readily available to those who want them (in which case no one is "turning to guns") or newer weapons are mostly imported from the U.S. and obviously more likely to be found among those with easy access to the United States. I agree that the ATF-supplied weapons are only a minor part of the stream, and the attention focused on "fast and furious" is meant to deflect criticism of the unregulated exports. Not having much interest in obtaining firearms, nor spending my time with the kinds of people who do, what I have not in the hands of cops and criminals are older weapons. The age of the weapons isn't a factor. A Vietnam era M-16 is just as lethal as an AR-15 fabricated in 2009. My 1911 .38 super will kill you as easy as a 9mm Glock.
