I have lived in Mexico City for several years in a small apartment building where I am the only foreigner though, before moving to a much nicer building down the street, my best gringo friend (and now my landlord) lived here for over 30 years. I've stayed in this building many times over the years, so when I moved back to Mexico in 2007, I already felt at home and was familiar with the neighborhood. I am good friends with a couple of my neighbors and get along with the rest (except for a couple of them who are not friendly to anyone!) . Knowing people in my building gives me a sense of security and community and has helped to put my mother's mind at ease about the fact that I live alone.

Great another burden on the Mexican Health Care System! Nothing like a freeloading Gringo to screw up something intended for the Mexican Citizens. Terry - you are a joke and it is no wonder that you moved to Mexico!

Thanks. I've been coming to Mexico for many years, so by the time I decided to retire here, a lot of the usual problems that expats encounter had been taken care of. Also, the fact that I speak Spanish fluently has helped a lot!

you are so wrong except maybe about terry. let me use one of your phrases"pot, kettle, black".
calderon brought in seguro popular as a universal health care system for ALL residents of mexico. imss is not working. we paid into it for 5 years to the tune of $500cdn/year and never used it only to discover that we probably won't be allowed to. a friend with a mexican wife who paid into it for over 6 years was dumped after getting a pace maker and they even tried to tell him that he must give it back. thank you el presidente for seguro popular! even though one is enrolled,as we are, one does not have to use all the services,as we won't . if we do use it for something serious at hosp. civil in guad,it is my understanding that we will be asked to pay what we can afford.it's kinda like-let your conscience be your guide-ain't it.as a tourist and pillager of businesses down here neil, i would suggest you study a bit more before you make comments about that which you do not know.
sorry people to fall into neil's thread hijacking from the op but his post needed correcting on such an important issue as health care in mexico not new mexico-SNORK!
