SACTEL?

I saw the information below on a post on another forum (SMA). I have never heard it mentioned before and wonder if this is a myth (or have I just had my head in the sand!)?

"When the police stop you for a shakedown if you have a cellphone tell them you want to call SACTEL 1-800-386-2466 because you don't understand what they are saying. Being non-confrontive is best. We had this happen to us in Saltillo and they left almost immediately after I mentioned SACTEL."

I do something similar, taped to the back of my drivers license is:

SINDICATURA DEL GOBIERNO MUNICIPAL
863-4095----617-1561

Sindicatura is the equal to internal affairs in the US. When they see the note they have forgotten why they stopped you and send on your way....

It sounds as if you would need the number for the local Sindicatura where you are stopped - it's worth a try but might be hard to come up with all the numbers when you are on a long distance trip.

The numbers on my card are from Baja California but without and area code you average policeman would see the name first and stop his own law breaking..And it worked in Guadalajara.

By the way the 1-800-386-2466 is not the phone number they have on their website...in Mexico to call a free number you must dial 01-800-386-2466...

One more thing of interest, SACTEL is a Federal Government Program and only applies to Federal Civil Service Employees. So the OP on the SMA board must have been stopped by a Federal Policeman...........
