I am sure they are not as pure as the driven snow but they are very good at apearring pure.
We had a distributor in Arizona who was investigated for years before he had to sell as one of the owner was a member of the NY Colombo family, they were part of the Jewish Italian mob prevalent in the liquor business and then an apparently straight Italian family bought them out, in turn the business was sold to another distributor who was rumored to be part of the old mob. They were investigated for many years..no proof.
I was at one of the family members wedding in Vegas when my husband asked´one of the family´s son if he was a Vegas boy. The young man answered actually my family is from upstate New York and came to Vegas in the 50´s.. Sometimes in the liquor business you are not sure if reality is imitating the movies or vice-versa.

So in the end - it appears where you drink, and who you drink with, is your primary choice. If you are at any of the blue chip, beachside restaurant bars here in Puerto Vallarta, a double margarita (Mexican size!) will set you back $140 pesos, and it will have squeezed limes and topshelf tequila. If you find yourself in working poor neighborhoods of Mexico, in one of the little corner stalls (I don't know the word in Mexican - Toddy Shops in Jamaica, India) where someone definitely wants a shot or two stronger than Pulque before the sun goes down - then (I imagine) $14 pesos is the target price.

I believe the 25% tax on alcohol is applied to everything produced in Mexico or imported into Mexico.

While I have been unable to confirm this with a published article, I had it explained to me that "made for export" Tequilas, such as Patron, are exported and then re-imported thus getting a double whammy on the tax. The net result is that Patron is often higher priced than in some US States.
