Hola! My name is Francisco (Pako). I have lived in San Francisco de Campeche for 6 years, but only recently discovered this website. My daughter is an herbalist and will be visiting me next month. She would enjoy a walk and talk with a guide familiar with the medicinal plants in the area. We would appreciate any information you could share.

I did not think so but I met a herborist from Spain that came to San Cristobal to go to the Museum so I would think that there is more there than I thought. They also sell books with pictures and descriptions of the plants the Maya use. The book is in Tsotsil and Spanish. Most plants are for ailments related to stomach aches, salmonella and othe digestive problems and so on as well as ailments connected to delivery of babies.
You can buy most of these plants at the municipal market on a fresh and dried form. The market is a maze but if you enter it via the steps going down from one street north of Simojovel (and Tonala) and go straight down (north) you will find an alley on the left handside past the entrances to the covered market that has all the fresh plants.
If you want the dry variety go down the same entrance from the steps and turn left at the first intersection on the left handside you will find a store that sells all kind of spices and medicenal plants. Many of the spices we use are also used in medecine.
One of the plants I used in the past against salmonella is chihuahuac in a tea.
To get to the museum go down (north) on General Utrillo past the municial market the road will curve to the left and has cheap pine furniture and at the point where the posts of furniture stop, on the left you will see the entrance to the museum. There are sometimes knowledgeable peple there and you can ask them for the name of a person who knows the plants.

Are you aware that San Francisco de Campeche is at least a long days drive from San Cristobal de Las Casas - and that the highlands of Chiapas do not have the same plants or medicines as the Campeche state area.

If you want highland and mountain plant information, go to Chiapas - it is lovely there. If you want Campeche plant and medicine information, cannot find someone knowlegeable in the lowland jungle and coastal plants of Campeche in the Campeche Ciudad area, I could direct you to some people in Yucatan - around the Piste area - where the plants are the same or similar to Campeche. I could also find someone in the Muna area, with a little effort.

I've seen one particular stall in the Centro de Abasto, an elderly gentleman who has a tremendous amount of herbs, twigs, seeds etc, all purported to have medicinal qualities, almost like a Mexican version of a Chinese apothecary. I can't make any claims as to what exactly is offered there, but I'm sure your daughter would find it interesting, we did.
