Marisela Morales Ibáñez, Mexico's procuradora general (attorney general), a specialist in organized crime, recently made a disturbing, although not surprising, remark during a nationally televised interview. "Los narcotraficantes tienen más dinero, más armas, y más poder que nosotros del gobierno." ('Narcotraficantes have more money, more guns, and more power than the Mexican government.') Then she simply shrugged and said, "Y qué vamos a hacer?" ('And what are we to do?')

The disturbing part, in my opinion, was that she was speaking in her official government role as attorney general and actually admitted what many of us have believed for a long time. The government is not usually so forthcoming.

AND it is worth mentioning that Pres. Calderón and the government plan not to cite further numbers of people killed in the on-going narco wars 'until we have a valid data base'. This was announced yesterday, both in newspapers and on national televised news reports. Announced to some disbelief and derision, I might add.

Sources (not government sources) announced on Dec 14, 2011, that since December 2006, the number of dead in narco confrontations has risen to more than 60,000.

Morales seems to be suggesting a need for more money, guns, etc. on the government side, but that smacks of the definition of insanity "doing the same thing and expecting different results" while calling to mind Gandhi's observation that "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind."

I'm not the best of prognosticators, but there seems to be a real chance that we're going to see more political support for non-violent (or violence-reducing) measures like growing internal markets, alternative rural employment, increased educational spending, and economic reform and less support for the U.S. sponsored "solutions" to a U.S. social problem that's brought nothing to Mexico but violence.

This is what too many of us have thought. Sad and scary. Thanks for posting this Esperanza. Wonder how long it will last on the Coldwell Banker webbsite More Liana? To me, you are the most informative and knowledgeable person on both webbsite and you always give the most accurate information with zero personal sniping. I have admired your posts for a few years. do not like this one, but appreciate you posting it. fug

I think Patrick is in some ways confirming what I notice... that "security" (in the sense of more guns, more money, more trucks) isn't seen as the answer to anything, and economic and social reforms are more in the voters (and vote-seekers) minds than the foreign media presumes.
