WHY?	Can't Post \| Private Reply

I have been a member on this forum going back to the "pay to play"days. While we don't live in Mexico, it is an area of high interest for us and we make numerous extensive trips there.

Just today it was pointed out to me by a female forum member something which has been on my mind for some time. It has become apparent that the male members of this forum have exhibited this need to be smarter than or more of an an expert on various topics based upon their personal experiences or length of time living in Mexico. The fallacy is that their knowledge or experiences are only valid for their particular locale. Passing off info gleaned from a Google search rarely works for Mexico since we all should know that things are rarely applied equally through Mexico.

While it is great for one's ego to think of oneself as knowledgeable and an expert, you may be doing someone a disservice by stating things as an absolute! People with real experience in Mexico should accept the fact that things are rarely an absolute and that is one of the charms or frustrations of the Country!

I´m a female member and fairly new and I have found that all but the occasional threads are informative and civil.

I like Mexico Connect because it IS informative (not just a chat room for bored people, as is the case with so many Forums) and people do a lot of research into the facts they present. Many of the experiences are interesting and informative, whether they come from long-term or recent-to-Mexico people, and regardless of the sex, sexual orientation, nationality, etc. of the posters.

One ups manship is drilled into American Males since they were infants. We never want to be the last one chosen for basketball. This negative trait along with knowing almost everything really comes out when we find ourselves in this culture. When I have coffee with some of the other expats, it usually turns into one story after another each of us trying to out due the other. Forgive us and blame it on our American upbringing where its all about money and getting the best looking females. I for one, recognize that this is truly an obstacule in us living normal happy lives by world standards. Many escape into alcohol. Me, I have to deal with it the hard way. I have had to learn to accept that nothing is really that important.

and apparently another thing that is drilled into you is that only merkins exhist-SNORK! the board jefe is a canucklehead and so is tony burton[partly] and so am i and this is the first mexican board i ever went on and that was before it became pay per view.
i don't post anything that i am not sure of unless it's personal opinion. well i am sure of my opinions but opinions are a difernt kettle o' fish from fact-n'est pas?

Is this is a mis-speak, since our own personal experiences for our particular locale would seem to be the one thing that we do know well => not fallacies? Did you mean to say that some people create fallacies by extrapolating their local experiences into national generalities?

My statement does need clarification! My objection is that all too often posters do not qualify there statements by emphatically stating that "this was my experience in X area" and then these statements are often followed by a contradiction from someone in a different locale. Newbies or amateur Mexico travelers often have no clue just how variable or inconsistent things can be in Mexico. When they see one of the typical testosterone fueled debates, they either become totally confused or simply have to pick who sounds the most credible for advice. To use you as an example, your experiences down in the Yucatan may have no basis in fact in Jalisco, Sinaloa or some other Mexican State. Probably the best example is the Mexico/US border and the inconsistencies that one reads about from one crossing to the next.

So where does the opinoin of a person from New Mexico rate on subjects of Old Mexico? Reading forums,books and newspapers along with the yearly vacation makes a person intrested in a subject but far from knowledgable.

Your point is the reason I don't post much but just lurk. In the past I have found that I get challenged for just relating an experience. I am not here for a pissing match.

I used Mexconnect pre-pay and now. I never was a paying member. There is plenty of free stuff on the net, Rolly's and Steve's are example of sites with a wealth of information.

Here is a fact I have learned from my experience of living in Mexico, "Anything and everything is possible" with the right connections and the cash in hand. Laws are mere suggestions. Our NOB morals, values, and ways of doing things just don't apply here. You want a valid Mexican passport in your name, there is a way. You want to nationalize any car, there is a way and it doesn't matter the year, make or country of origin. The expats I know that understand this have a fuller life and the ones that keep NOB ideals and try to import these ideals are often not happy with life here.

Just my two cents. I think I am going to crawl back into my hole and start lurking again.

Playaboy is spot-on: The rules sometimes do mean little and are inconsistently applied.

On Christmas Eve (and New Years Eve?) this year, the bus companies in Merida stopped service at 10:00 PM - stranding 100's of hopeful potential passengers - many workers hoping to get home to their families.... As my wife and I drove home, we noticed groups of 10 - 15 people, standing forlornly at the bus stops, but we didn't know why.

Since it was a "special holiday" - our PRI mayoral office also supposedly suspended the rules governing and restricting taxi fares. Taxi drivers took advantage charging up to $300 pesos a ride to people who find a $7 peso bus ride to be pricey.

In addition to ego driven extrapolations, the realities of what's supposed to happen vs. what actually happens is sometimes beyond what we can imagine, even when there are clear rules => good reason for us to use care in telling people "how things are".

True enough, but what a PRI mayor can get away with and what some gringo on an rentista visa can get away with are likely to be very different. Stick to the rules (written and unwritten) and you're much less likely to be whining about some alleged injustice done to you. Or at least have a better chance of people pretending to almost care about your plight.
