US broadcasting in Mexico with Sky

Does anyone know if Sky satellite/cable company offers any US broadcast channels? I went to the company website but didn't see anything remotely close. If not, is their any other companies that works in the Tlaxcala/Puebla area. Thanks in advance for any help/advice. Its all appreciated.

Sky used to have 3 channels that transmit completely in English and with no subtitles: FOX News, NFL Network and BBC World.

Plus they had 14 channels of North American programs where SAP or Second Audio Program is available in channels: ESPN International, TNT, Discovery Channel, FOXm ESPN International, TNT, Animal Planet, Discovery Kids, History Channel, A&E, Nickelodeon, FOX, Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, People and Arts, Boomerang and National Geographic Channel - where you choose between English or Spanish to watch.

Contact your local provider to confirm that they still offer these channels, because they seem to have the right to change the channels and programming whenever they want.

If that's not enough, you might also consider Shaw Direct TV service out of Canada - with 100's of channels of US programmming, or consider Dish Network out of the USA with 150 - 350 channels of US programming (depending on what dishes you have).

I'm curious about Shaw Direct usage in Mexico. I know that many folks use this service down here but do they not do so 'pretending' that they are residents of Canada?

One doesn't need to be a resident of Canada. The requirement is a Canadian address.

David, I really don't care who uses Shaw Direct and where (I would probably subscribe if I lived in Mexico!), but I believe that the requirement is that one must have a legal Canadian address not just give a Canadian address. Yes, Shaw does have the 'home away from home' program but this is meant for the Canadian resident, who has a Shaw account, to be able to get the second receiver... either in an RV or another home. If my belief is wrong someone will correct me.

My point was that using this service or advising someone of its availability does not meet the test of complete honesty as it (in my belief) is illegal to acquire this service in Mexico (or the US). Again, I state that I would avail myself of this service if the circumstance presented itself but that speaks to my 'morality' but not legality as I see it.

I got SKY basic because I didn't see more English options in the other packages.

E Intertanment (terrible) is English and the 2 Golden channels have mostly English movies. Sports channels are in Spanish but pretty good coverage. Fox channel is English sit-coms with canned laughter.

No news or financials in English

There's a company or two in the Chapala/Guad area that will set you up with Shaw. You just pay twice for the hardware

More and more folks are beginning to stream video (US or Canadian TV) via the internet. I only stream audio via an "app" on my iPhone that sends what radio station I want to listen to, to a set of speakers.

I could do the same with TV but, being lazy, choose to use my Shaw Direct system. It gives me my home town and the satellite dish is quite small. I've had then Star Choice down here since it went active in Feb. 2001. I of course, use it up north too.

Rolly, this was what I thought would be what I would do. But, someone from Canada told me that they couldn't get something from cbs from up there so I wasn't sure if I could from down in Mexico. Also, I went to the website you referenced, and it asked me when I was traveling. I entered the information and it said I could get 4 hours. Is that something I could do each week or will I only get 4 hours period?

Does anyone know if the satellite companies work everywhere in Mexico? (Directv/Dish).

If I purchase the Canadian satellite programming, will they travel to where I am to install it which is about 2 hours east of Mexico City?

Like I replied in the first answer: You could consider Dish Network from the USA, depending on what size dish and how many dishes.

You can get many Dish Network channels with a good quality 1.1 meter dish, (pointed at satellite 110W), but it often takes a 1.8m or 2.4m dish to get a full suite of programming. Check out Lyngsat's lists of channels to determine which US cities have their network channels broadcast nationally (CONUS beam vs. spot beam), because you need a Dish Network subscription from a city with a strong CONUS beam signal to get ABC, CBS, NBC, & Fox.

In Eastern Mexico http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish61.html , http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish110.html , http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish119.html ,

In Central and Western Mexico: http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish110.html , http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish119.html , http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/dish129.html

DirecTV is available, but it often has a smaller list of channels available, but it often takes a big 2.4m dish. It also takes a NYC or LA or ??? address to get ABC, CBS, NBC, & Fox channels.

You should be able to get Shaw Direct in your location with a small dish (75 cm? - 1.1m), but I have no idea who sets up satellite TV in your area. I think you have to actually tell us a city name to able to answer your questions.

As I also suggested in my first reply: check out other threads in this forum to find out how these things work.

Hey Sparks. I love your message. :) I don't know what I did wrong. It must have been those two light beers.

And most of what I attempted to post, has already been answered after my screw-up. One point, the size of the satellite dish(s) for DISH and DirecTV USA are different in different locations in Mexico. Usually the farther south, the larger. Often up to 2.4 meters or 8 feet in diameter. Or even larger.

In much if not most of Mexico, if you are using the Shaw Direct system, you need the 75 E Shaw Direct Dish (with matching LNB) and it only measures 36.5 by 26.5 inches.

Which system is best for you? Only you can answer that. It all depends upon the programming.

Remember that many of the local TV stations from various parts of the US are spot beamed only to the local area and can not be viewed in Mexico on DISH and DirecTV.

Luckily my home towns are viewable in Mexico on Shaw Direct (Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria).

A number of people in the Melaque area use a SKY dish with a Shaw LNB. Only issue I know of is no hi-def

On the site Rolly suggested, http://www.ustvnow.com/ you get the first 4 channels in the lineup for free. You have to pay a monthly fee for the remaining channels.

These are free but you are relying on people who are broadcasting for free and sometimes the channels are offline. Usually you can find channels at another site:

You guys are the greatest. I went to thertv.com and it worked great. I got the addresses loaded to favorites and I have the "check on cable" crossed off my list. Now, I don't have to worry about missing my favorite programs. Thanks to everyone that gave me information because it was really great info. I appreciate all of your help.

As I pointed out in the PM, the Broadway will let you connect with a cable or satellite receiver in the States to watch whatever tv pkg you have in the States anywhere you have a highspeed Internet connection or wi-fi. The iPad has an accessory that attaches to a digital tv to show on the tv whatever is on the iPad. Just another option if you are looking for more channels. I'll be spending time in a number of RV parks with wi-fi and I'll have immediate tv without going through the trouble of setting up a dish or arranging for Canadian satellite. So I think it's worthwhile.
