I had a double shock this year. My Mexican wife died on February 27th. I sold her 1995 van to pay her mothers; property taxes in Mexico (City). I had not driven our second car for several months, and the registration had expired on it.
I called an expediter that I use, to help me pay the late fee, and get a current registration on it. He told me I needed to notify the immigration service within 30 days that I was no longer “Familiar”, but a viudo, after 30 days I would be subject to a fine. The 30 days was already past. I didn't expect it, but nowhere was there any mention that anyone needed to notify them if they became widowed, or that a fine would be levied after 30 days.
After we finished at the Transito office, he went to the immigration service, and came back and told me I needed to pay them $200 Pesos to modify their records. I paid that amount. About two weeks later, he sent me an email saying he had bad news from the immigration service. I needed to pay for a new immigrante visa card, the cost was the same, $200 Pesos.
I had to go there with him, so new fingerprints could be taken, I think I may have used another photo the same as I used for last years renewal in October. At least I now have a new visa card that doesn't expire until November 22nd 2012. So it was almost a wash financially. I didn't need to renew my visa this October.
My expediter is very efficient, and his fees are extremely low. He comes to my house to have me sign any letters that he has written, and he takes me in his car to the immigration office as needed. He also interprets my last three US bank statements himself, at no charge. Yes, the last three bank statements are required here every year, and they must be translated into Spanish here. I used to need to pay $200 Pesos per page to have them translated every year.
