Temporary importation of car...cash bond or credit card?

My wife and I are planning to drive to Mexico again this winter and I have been following the information on the new requirements for the temporary importation of a vehicle. I am looking for first hand information on which method of payment is working out to be the best, a cash bond or using a credit card? I have read conflicting accounts about which currency is used if paying in cash and which currency do you get your refund in. We are planning to cross the border in early Feb but I am planning ahead as to avoid surprises.

In any case, it WILL be in US dollars. Now, some have used credit cards and I believe they actually got a refund. When I in TX in OCT, I held out USD cash just in case I had to pay. I never turn in my sticker, so it wasn't a consideration this time. But, I had two areas of consideration, will my credit card company honor a charge from MX as I have some restrictions on my card and if I leave, what's the chances of them crediting back to my card - especially should my card be canceled/stolen/replaced for any reason before I leave.

Hola, I pondered over your same question last month, although I had a wad of Pesos from a trip in July, I did decide to use my credit card incase there was a dispute...I did ask at the bank if they accept pesos and they replied of course but I was exiting from a much smaller crossing than Nogales I decided to keep the pesos for gas and tolls... be sure and put your receipt in a safe and handy place and they also give you a copy of the deposit agreement...it explains what to do if a card is lost, stolen or replaced.......

...they also give you a copy of the deposit agreement...it explains what to do if a card is lost, stolen or replaced.

Sure Rolly, 3 items are stapled together:
1. the Banjercito receipt....for deposit and vehicle import fee.
2. the Temporary Vehicle Import form with decal attached...
3. Temporary Vehicle Importation-Guarantee Deposit Receipt...which states:

The amount will be reimbursed into the same credit card which was originally used to make the deposit. Should the credit card be cancelled before the reimbursement takes place,I will notify Banjercito of this fact and provide an alternate account number where the money can be reimbursed.

Thank you for the comments. I think that what I will do is to be prepared for all options. Have enough cash ready along with the CC.

One word of caution re: having enough money, there is usually a speed trap at San Luis Potosi - and yes, they will "allow" you to pay them on the spot, I did 3 years ago and on the other forum under the thread "Trip to Laredo and back" you'll find the location and what the lady paid the other day. I have it programmed into my GPS.

I crossed the border a few weeks ago and was surprised that they now charge your card for the deposit. In my case there was a total charge of just over $260 put on my credit card(really old van...newer vehicles are more). Last time I crossed they just put your credit card number on record in case you didn't exit with your vehicle. I was told to be sure and keep the paperwork and when I cross back to the US it will be refunded to me.
I'm sure the reason they have gone to this is because of folks like my ex. He never returned his sticker and in fact I was asked if I had a sticker out when I was applying for my current sticker....obviously my passport is linked to his in the computer.

That's why reading the posts on Mexconnect are so important for folks planning on trips into Mexico. This new requirement has been thoroughly reported here for months.

In some areas, arrangements have been made with Aduana to notify of a renewal of Visa that supposedly stops forfeiture of the deposit. However, I have not seen any evidence that these efforts truly work.
