I have my car in Mexico on my FMM and I drive around the country once a year, I was thinking while in Chetumal this February I would like to take the jet boat into Belize for a day or two to visit a couple of the islands...Is there any place like Aduana where I can store my car? I do not want to give up my FMM because of Vehicle Permit and have to go through deposit refund and
have to repete the whole process in two days..

So I guess my question is can I keep my FMM for the two days I am in Belize?

Unless things have changed recently or if they handle things differently at that particular crossing, your FMM is valid for 180 days and you are under no obligation to turn it in upon exit. Should you turn it in, you would receive a new 180 day FMM. Apparently you are under the impression that your vehicle permit is tied in some way to your FMM and from our experience, this isn't the case unless one gets into all of the technicalities regarding the permit being good as long as one has a valid visa.

Hola Neil, I am not saying my FMM is tied to my TIP but on the right hand side of the Permit is the number of my FMM....

When I exit Mexico through Sonoyta they have me return my FMM before they scrape the decal off the window...

Because of the new deposit rule now I just do not feel like loosing $400.00 at this time......

It's sort of a catch 22 situation. The new FMM tourist visa must be turned in at the Mexican border when leaving México and the car SHOULDN'T be left in México. BUT…since Aduana (customs) doesn't know this, there shouldn't be any problem and you wouldn't have to get a new temp. sticker. The chance of getting hassled because the new FMM doesn't have the same number that is on your current TIP is somewhere between slim and not at all.

HOWEVER, everything has been changed by computerization since the new FMM went into effect, and I doubt that anyone actually KNOWS whether Aduana now tracks TIPs against FMMs. $400 is quite a large gamble to make just to find out. We do know that they track TIPs against FM3s and FM2s.

Why does he need a new FMM? If his current FMM is still valid there is no requirement to turn it in when leaving Mexico and reentering on that FMM visa.? I know for a fact both a FMM and a US B2 visa does not have to be turned in each time you leave to re enter either the US or Mexico if they are valid, even though it may state that on the back.

I guess I could keep the car in the hotels secure parking lot, precede to the pier and tell immigration I lost my FMM, they charge me any fine and I visit Belize for two days then get a new FMM to re enter Mexico and throw it away, reverting back to my original FMM....but that would be lying.....

Please read my above post. You are doing nothing wrong by keeping your valid FMM on you when you leave and reenter Mexico showing them this FMM.

As so often happens in Mexico, YMMV. On numerous occasions, Immigration at the San Jeronimo/Santa Teresa border crossing has attempted to talk us out of cancelling our FMT's (now FMM) because we had used so few days of the allocated time and the same was true with cancelling our vehicle permits. On one occasion, we followed their advice but then forgot about the expiration date on the FMT's and that cost us dearly when re-entering Mexico. In our case, we always obtained our vehicle permits at the Mexican Consulate and the numbers were never tied to an FMT obtained at the border.

Alan, Then why would this be printed on the front of my part of the FMM:

This form must be filled out individually by every foreigner entering Mexico,
including diplomatic personal and will turned in upon departure from the country......

Why would the US immigration ask you to turn in a Mexican FMT or now a FMM when driving across EL Puente? I cross all the time while holding a FMT or now a FMM that is in my wallet. I don't tell them I have it. They don't care. When driving into Mexico I don't show it if I get the red light. They always walk to the back, signal me to pop the trunk and close the trunk and wave me on whether I have my suitcase there or not. They do not bother to come to the window to make eye contact or ask me anything. The airport in TJ or Mexicali are where I get them, and many in a row. once I was going through the security at the mexicali airport to leave and did not get the red light and the Immigration officer at his booth said :"Americano". I said yes. He said do you have a visa. I said yes. He said can I please see it. I did and he glance at it and said "Thank you sir." All the other dozen or more times I either got a FMT or FMM from him or not when going south it is the only time he asked. The other times I had a valid one he did not ask. He knows me by now and just nods as I smile at him.

The exact same thing is printed on the back of the US B2 visas. I have a Mexican national wife and the first time she handed her and her niece's in after her niece and herself got them to go to LA last summer on their 2 week vacation. I have a condo in SD. It took 90 minutes to get them in Mexicali. When my wife came back to the TJ airport and we where going to Palm Springs 1 1/2 months later and it took us 3 hours to get one at the TJ/San Diego crossing. I asked them and they said do not worry about her keeping it if she is returning again, one is good for 180 days. Then when flying to Central Mexico with her I asked the Immigration at the TJ airport the same question and he said I can reenter as many times as I want for !180 days and then get a new one, just keep it. I knew that all along but asked anyway.

San Jeronimo/Santa Teresa sounded like a crossing on the Rio Grande. I was replying to another poster Amigo.

Then why would you even stop at the Mexican Immigration to have a chat with them? TIP vehicle tag. Would that still be the same vehicle you would be returning to Mexico in? A few here have stated they drive anywhere they want in the US with one and have no problems when reentering Mexico at all. If you want to get more fees for nothing just chat with them I am sure they be glad to oblige you. As you stated you did figure that out and do you still stop to chat with them when leave to the US for awhile? I personal just do my own thing and now know the rules much better now and if I had done something wrong in the past I didn't get caught.

Alan:

Where do I say anything about US Immigration. At our previously stated border crossing between Mexico & New Mexico, one has to park and go inside a building to either obtain or turn in a FMT/FMM at the Mexican Immigration counter. Voiding a vehicle permit is a separate process where one drives up a side road to a special shack before you cross the actual border. With the way our crossing is constructed - it is totally optional whether you stop or not when exiting Mexico.

Alan, I never mentioned San Jeronimo/ Santa Teresa, I believe Neil mentioned it...I am talking about LEAVING Mexico through Arizona as far as having to return the FMM before the TIP, but my OP was leaving Mexico for Belize for a day or two.......

Basically Mazbook1 is wrong. It does not have to be turned in EVERY TIME you leave Mexico no matter WHAT it states on the FMM.

No Alan, you are wrong not Mazbook, if you have a FMM in your wallet read the front above where you filled it out...It states:

This form must be filled out individually by every foreigner entering Mexico,

It is pretty Black and White to me, if you do not turn it in then you are breaking the law Alan.....I love your line:

No matter what it states on an official Mexican Gov. document...

Then why would the Mexican Immigration Officer at the TJ airport tell me the opposite and to not worry IF you are returning to continue your 180 stay?

Then why would the US Immigration Officer tell my wife and I exactly the same thing as the Mexican officer did when on the back of a US B2 180 days visa it states exactly the same thing as the FMM states. You must turn your visa in when leaving the country? They state if you are not leaving the country for the length of the 180 day visa just keep it and it will be valid and you can come and go as you please. You seem to be stuck on a technically that was not in writing on the form but any Immigration Office in Mexico will tell you. It is valid for 180 days, come and go as you please.

What about FMM holders living on the border and crossing every week or so, like me? Do I want to wait in line at the Migra to turn it in and then every time I fly south pay another $227.00 pesos 5 or 6 weeks after I just paid for one. Does a Mexican national want to stand in line for about 90 minutes every Friday night or so when visiting his girlfriend or family living past the free zone? Do I have to or do they have to. No we don't.

After a quite expensive lesson in 2009, I have concluded that there are NO experts when it comes to the workings of the Mexican Government! I wouldn't even claim that what had always happened at a given border crossing for five or even ten years would guarantee the procedure today.

One of Mexico's charms is that is a country with few, if any, absolutes and members of this and other forums seem to forget the use of words like if, maybe, possibly, etc.

Simply go ask them your question. If there is an office close by it will take you no time at all. Simple. BTW She flew out of TJ. I will leave my car at my house in Mexicali when flying for a shorter visit.

Technically, no. But people go in and out every day without a problem == but you never know when an INM guy will decide to enforce the rules.
