Registration of marriage license

Can't Post | Private Reply
We will soon be applying for what was formerly the FM2 for the 1st time. My wife and and I are US citizens and were married in the US. Has anyone ever heard of a requirement that our US marriage license must be registered in the town we live in and in Guadalajara where we will apply for the immigration papers ?

Thanks for any help.

No, but I used to need to provide an apostilled copy of our marriage license every year here in Cuernavaca. A new copy was required every year to renew my FM3 and FM2. Just about every office in every state has different requirements though. A lawyer told me if I would give him a copy, he would register it in México City. According to Mexican laws the copy must be returned to me. He was right, it was returned to me every year. I don't really remember the cost now, but it was cheap, probably around $1,000 Pesos. Far cheaper than paying around $20 US Bucks every year for an apostilled copy.

We only had to show that certificate once for the new wallet sized visa card though, I have renewed it a couple of times now.

I don't remember the name of the federal office where he registered our apostilled marriage certificate. It will be probably be worth it to find out though.

.......And that is only because you are claiming your wife as a dependent. I believe, if you had individual visa's the marriage certificate would not be required however you would have to also submit separate proofs of income.

My late wife was a Mexican citizen. She was born and raised in México City, no visa for her was required. I still had to prove enough income to support her though, in several states.

As I said, every state interprets the laws as they want. Every division Gerente may add to, delete, and interpret the laws as they want to, legally.

You will never know, until you visit any federal office here, what is required locally. Federal laws are not applied uniformly in this country. Believe it, after you have lived here a few decades, you will know it.

Interesting. Why could you not have simply held a visa with no dependants then? Did you gain citizenship through the marriage or something?

Asked and answered. If I wanted to get a visa for myself, I must show that I can support a wife, Mexican or not, here.

The wishes of the lowest level clerk, is the law for you here. You must visit a local office to find out what will be required of you. If they say it is required, live with it, or move. There is no in-between.

My own citizenship had nothing to do with it, In fact, I was improperly denied Mexican citizenship a few years ago. No one is interested in proving a low level clerk in another city was wrong. Now that my Mexican wife has died and I have lost the shortcut to citizenship, I will probably seek “immigrado” status in a year for my new wallet sized visa card. I am already classified as a “immigrante.”

Logic does you no good in any government office here. Using logic is the best way to lose a dispute here.
