I'd recommend Arkansas. You can live about as cheaply as you can in Mexico with the things that you require. Especially if you own your own house. You can't beat the cost of living.

I have a nice place for sale here :)

There are some things that are definitely cheaper in Mexico, but my main reason for wanting to move back is the people and sense of adventure. If you are just looking for cheap and not that interested in Mexico itself....I'd recommend exploring your options here in the US.

I am definitely interested in Mexico, have taken transfers to 3 cities on the Mexican border. Apparently if one is curious about if there are any places reasonably close to the border that are worthwhile then one truly doesn't love Mexico and isn't as committed as you are. If it'll make you happy I most likely will live in Oaxaca and if not there either Orizaba, Veracruz or Comitan, Chiapas. And if cheap is the only criteria I'll move to Guatemala. But what I won't do is try to prove how much I love Mexico. Saw enough of that in Santa Fe, and the locals there truly would prefer that their town stopped being loved to death. Regards...

Just a note. I live in the same area as Yucalandia and my expenses are way more than the ones he quoted. I will report my expenses in pesos since that is the currency that I use and what it cost to buy that currency changes. My property taxes are $559, my health insurance for a couple is $35859 per year. I choose to privately insure as the IMSS system seems stressed and the private hospitals are more to my liking. Most of the skilled workers that I have had cost more like $500 per day. My specialists cost $500 per visit. I have my house cleaned for $225 plus another $88 to cover his IMSS and aguinaldo. My internet phone and TV are $820. I pay close to $1500 per month for CFE.

I have no idea what it would cost to live in Arkansas but I do know I win some and lose some over what it would cost me to live in Canada. I also know that I do not live frugally or particularly concern myself with spending as little as possible.
I also do not dispute Yucalandia's budget but do feel it is important to note that costs rely heavily on how you are able or choose to live and I choose to live much the same as I would if I lived in Canada.

Is it a full moon or something?! I can only respond to what is written and certainly don't know everyones backgrounds or previous experiences. Y'all continue without me. This oversensitivity and snippiness is one reason I prefer not to have gringo neighbors.

My wife and I have driven our RV to Sonora Mexico for the last 5 years. We have found it very easy to boondock camp outside of any small coastal town. We have always been treated well, had beautiful free beach RV camping. Every 5 days or so we will use a established RV park to either camp for the night or just pay about $10 to use their hookups to empty and fill tanks. This year we decided to move to an area we liked and advertised on a local forum for an RV spot. We found a very nice couple with a private home that has full hookups, laundry, OS kitchen, wi fi and cable. Total cost pr mo, $250 US. Now that we are here we will look for a nice rental home if we decide to stay here year round. Their are many more RV spots just like this here but will vary in price. Without our RV we could never have afforded our exploration or our move down here. We do bring a motorcycle with us for transportation so our RV stays parked. I say go for it.

You are entirely correct.

I had a headache while writing this morning, and I allowed it to affect what I wrote. my tone was inappropriate. I have re-written the post to show proper respect. You have my sincere apology for using a harsh and critical tone. Your costs in Arkansas for required items may be the same as living in Mexico. Your experience in Mexico was different from ours, and my previous response was disrespectful.
My apologies,
steve

ps We do live middle class Mexican lives, and my Yucatecan wife and our knowledge of Spanish and Merida give us a different set of connections and different opportunities than many expats, so, our costs may be more representative of the costs local Yucatecans pay vs. what expats pay.

"It is when I hear people expressing than they are inflexible about certain things that I suggest maybe Mexico might not be the best place for them. Flexibility and a laid back attitude will go a long ways towards an enjoyable experience when living south of the border."

Bulls-eye on that comment, TxMex! Add to flexibility and a laid-back attitude that a person should have a gentle and somewhat skewed sense of humor about life and s/he will thrive in Mexico. Down here, you soon learn that you aren't in Kansas anymore, Toto.

I would add that things go better without a judgmental attitude. Just go with the flow.
It is much more likely that México will change you than you will change México.

Sorry for the snippiness but I just asked about an area near the border and was told by you and others that I was inflexible, was only looking to live cheaply, had to have certain things, etc, etc. Alot of assumptions for just asking a question. Since there's no way to know what I'm all about from just asking about a place, the best thing to do is share your knowledge about that place if you feel so inclined. Otherwise people who read this and other forums may never ask anything for fear of being made to look:(pick all that apply)ignorant, naive, foolish, and/or stupid. It's not a matter of being told what we don't want to hear, but whether the question asked is answered. And for all who gave me very good info about whether Magdalena de Kino(not del, sorry) is a safe and nice place to live, thank you! It will keep me from doing something foolhardy.
