Just leave it in the original box, preferably unopened. Have the sales reciept handy. Go to the customs desk and declare it. Pay the duty and have your friend reimburse you. I personally would not got push the green light red light button especially when they just X-rayed your suitcase and saw something strange in it. Go through the security at departures a little early in case it takes some time. If they disallow it on the plane try to have someone not travelling with you nearby to take it or simply give it to them nicely. I have seen many people loose lots of big bottles of bath items because they limit those bottles to about 6 or 8 ounces and have seen a few people just walk over to someone outside security and give it to them.

Personally, I wouldn't declare it and take my chances with red light/green light. In years of taking items into Mexico by plane, we have never had to pay even one Peso.

Besides if it is used and you are taking it down for personal use I doubt they would say anything about it even if they find it during a "red light" situation. I take lots of personal electronic items down in my luggage and have never had any problems. My biggest concern is whether or not it will get stolen by a baggage handler........

I, by default, was thinking of my experiences flying into Guadalajara from either Mexicali or TJ.. I see you will be flying into PV on an international flight and will go through Mexican customs when arriving. Sorry for my assumption that it would be a flight coming from inside Mexico, therefore the departure security I mentioned. The other posters are right. If it is an obviously used relatively inexpensive electrical piece I also would not bother declaring it at the airport. If you get the red light I feel you will have no problem.

When flying into México, you are allowed $300 dollars worth of non-personal items duty free. No need to declare it.

If you don´t speak Spanish fluently enough to describe its function, I would prepare one (verbal or written). We are familiar with Puerto Vallarta airport and sometimes they do ask what wierd looking non-touristy looking machines are, particularly since they have started scanning luggage.
