Hotel Dolores Alba has nice single rooms at $550 pesos = $40 USD.
It is well located, about 3 blocks from the zocalo. It has been the value leader in our market for years: nice rooms, clean, good service, nice pool, nice courtyard, well located for tourists. http://www.doloresalba.com/indexmain.htm#mda
To get anything cheaper would take you to either a few B&B's (not hotels), or love-motels (ok if you are driving, as they are mostly located around the Periferico), or hotels with less amenities...
