Moving to Lakeside in mid-December....big rental in Chula Vista.

Thanks to Peter's advice I'll have a trunkfull of Shaw PVRs and dishes.

Now for Internet. The house has high speed Telemex DSL.

Will this be fast enough to support my MajicJack?

What are your recommendations for a wireless router? Can I just get the latest N? Do I need a range extender? Additional access points?

My working assumption is that one will need access pretty well anywhere in the house and out on the terraza given the number of web gadgets that are going to be available.

Any suggestions/ specific recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

George

Telmex supplies a wireless router which works fairly well. I have two additional Linksys routers supporting wireless security cams and the casita. We have Skype and Vonage. Houses vary and due to the cement and steel construction you may find dead spots in your coverage. Additional routers are available here although generally more expensive.

Magic Jack runs fine on your Telmex DSL. Magic Jack runs well on just 75Kbps vs. Skype and other VOIP systems.

If you have to push WiFi signals through more than 1 mamposteria (rock) wall or more than 2 concrete block walls or more than one concrete floor (1'st floor to 2'nd floor), you'll likely need to string cable or set-up a strategically-placed wireless router in the "remote" area - with ethernet cable to connect your remote computer to the remote router. This means either bringing or buying a remote wireless router and some cable(s). Since the sweet spot for the remote router may not be next to the spot you want for your computer, you might need 25 - 50 ft of ethernet cable to bridge the gap(s).

Another alternative is to learn how to make your own ethernet cables, buy the tools in the States, and buy the bulk Cat 5 cable here. If you have a rental with a central courtyard, you may find it easiest to use the Texmex router in one structure, and then string network cable back to the other structure.

Yucalandia Steve, and Steve Brown, you make my job so easy with your great answers. And a reminder to the original poster, make sure you have the 75 E (not 60 E) satellite dish and LNB (the LNB is the electronics in front of the dish)

There are a number of options here for supplies, Radio Shack (although they are more boom box oriented these years), Steren, Office Depot (expensive), Best Buy (really expensive) and a sizable 3 story "Tech Mall" in Guad Centro. And yes, a crimper for making your own ethernet is best for custom work.

An example of costs here: I wanted a specific Linksys router to be used as a WAP, manufacturers list was $49. Office Depot had it for $65 which is full list plus 16% import plus 16% IVA almost to the penny, I bought two on Amazon for $30 each, free shipping to a friend in TX and I picked them up when I was there.
