Do anyone know about how much the tolls will cost me if I stay on the toll roads from Nuevo Laredo to PV?

We drove Nuevo Laredo to Vallarta in July and found a couple of errors at that time, but they were minor. Perhaps they have fixed them.

We personally don´t bother with toll roads between Saltillo and Guadalajara so I can´t really comment on the total amount (We just used the Guadalajara Vallarta toll road and the Monterrey bypass).

I am not familiar with the roads in Jalisco, but DO NOT take the libre between Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey. The military has had a major operation underway north of Sabinas Hidalgo trying to clear out the rural ranchos in the area.

Thank you all so much for your advice! Looks like it's around $120 for tolls.

"We personally don´t bother with toll roads between Saltillo and Guadalajara..."

If that's the case, then how do you go....from Saltillo to Zacatecas on 54 and then straight south from Zacatecas to Guadalajara on either 54 or 23?

Just my opinion but anyone choosing Hwy 23 or Hwy 54 at the current time would be exhibiting a lack of knowledge of current news through those regions. That is Zeta territory with them fighting with their rivals and the military and Federales.

Saving a few pesos by avoiding the cuotas seems a bit foolish at this point in time.

We drove 23 up in July and have done 54 many times. We do not do it to save pesos. Everybody has their own way of choosing a route. We do our research and make our decisions in a way which makes sense to us (which obviously varies from time to time).

Re: Highway 23, I´m not sure I´d do it again as it was rather tedious for the first half. Beautiful, but somewhat too much in the way of winding roads and high canyons. But we wanted to see Jerez, one of I believe 3 places in Mexico Mexican Catholics are supposed to go before they die :) Next time we´d probably go to Jerez from Zacetecas (however you wish to get there).

Anyway, these are for the most part both well-kept routes running through some very nice prosperous areas. Lush greenery, well-kept farms and ranches. A few too many topes in some areas for my liking (although most are well-behaved), but other than that, they are scenic drives and no longer in terms of time than other routes.

I'm curious what research tools you use and what factors you take into account in selecting a route? Specific and current information about local security conditions isn't always easy to find. For example, I'm not sure how someone would know about the military operations around Sabinas Hidalgo unless they read the Monterrey papers online or can watch Monterrey television. That sort of stuff doesn't often generate press coverage outside of the local area (assuming the media isn't too intimidated to report it) and certainly isn't going to get US or international coverage. It's just my opinion but one I think is shared by residents of north central/north east Mexico who have to travel, that in areas where the Zetas are active the cuotas are the roads of choice when they are a reasonable option.

Not sure, but I drove from Houston to PV in August, crossing at Laredo. It was 1,223 miles total cost gas y tolls was $250 USD. Sounds cheap to me, prob used gas credit cards on the US side. The drive was gorgeous, absolutely no problems.
