Best way to drive to Ajijic ?

In your opinion what is the best and safest way to drive from California to Ajijic ? Should we go through Laredo which is longer but with less driving time in Mexico or out of Arizona and down the pacific coast through Hermosillo which would require over two days of driving in Mexico ? Should mention we will be travelling with two dogs.

I'd go thru Nogales and stay on the cuota. Good road, easy route, drive during the daylight only and enjoy the scenery. You can find hotels that will take dogs at www.gringodog.com

Head for Phoenix then straight south thru Tucson to Nogales. Then Hwy 15 toll road all the way. Two days if you push it, or three relaxed days.

I think it kind of depends how comfortable you feel about driving in Mexico. Have you done it before? Do you speak/read Spanish? Are you familiar with some of the road rules that are different in Mexico than the US? Are you a good "defensive" driver? If the answers to these questions are "yes" then certainly the suggested Nogales route makes sense. One other question has to do with time of year. If you come in the Spring or Summer, it's going to be pretty warm coming down the Nogales route.

If the answers to the questions I asked are "no" then you might very well consider the Laredo route. Through Laredo, it is possible (at the right time of year with long days) to make the drive in one day without driving at night. You can also make it in two leisurely days with a stop somewhere like Matehuala. That's what my wife and I did when we first drove down from Oregon.

As to your dogs, if you plan to stay overnight on the road, you should take Pita's advice and check the website she provided for places to stay that are pet friendly. Better to know in advance than to scramble around finding some place as it gets later and later.

¡Buen viaje!

Hi

We come down from Oregon until we moved here full time. We use Lukeville Arizona to come in
to Mexico. It is about two hours east of Nagales and no lines. After you come into mexico you
go about 15 miles and hit the place where you get inspected get your visa's and car sticker. Easy
three day trip but many do it in two. We stay in Guamas area first day, Mazatlan second and easy
drive to Ajijic third day. You will be stopped again by customs later on the trip east to 15D don't
be alarmed it is normal. Two will connect up with 15 and than you will be stopped by Federals, People
at the state borders looking for meat and vegtables (just like california) and various flavors of police
from time to time. Drive slow through these and roll down your windows so they can see in. Smile
at them. They will smile back for the most part. Feel free to send me a PM and I will email you a US
phone that rings down here and we can talk. Yep Laredo is shorter but Lukeville and 15D down here
is a great ride with much beauty. I will say pay very much attention going through Hermasillo as the
bypass is not completed and they have a detour on the south end of town with very small signs but
that is the hardest part of the trip. Understand other than the big roads city signs for streets don't
exist in Mazatlan so make sure you download a map and pay attention to the signs for beaches if
your hotel in down on the beach.

Good Luck either trip is good!
