Undocumented Migration: It's Not the Economy, Stupid

Yesterday, I received a haircut from a woman whose mother is living in Juventino Rosas. A few weeks ago I had mentioned the kidnapping of a bus load of passengers which was traveling to the border from Celaya. In a call to her mother, she learned that a couple of the still missing victims are from her hometown and that, in fact, there were two different buses attacked on separate days. There is still no news of the victims' whereabouts. I found the following article interesting as one possible explanation for the decline in undocumented immigrants to the USA.

This is true. I live in central Veracruz State, near the main railroad line between Veracruz City and Mexico City. Just two years ago there were still many Central Americans traveling the rails north. Some trains carried hundreds. Today I rarely see more than one or two. I have talked to a few who have stayed here in Cordoba, they tell me it's to dangerous to make the trip north and plan on staying in Mexico, where at least they can find some kind of work.
