VW Camper van a good choice?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am looking to buy a vehicle here in the US and also plan to go back to Mexico within the next 6 weeks. I do a LOT of traveling (hence the name..lol). Being a penny pinching sort of person, I have figured out it is cheaper to drive an old VW camper van and pay more for gas than it is to ride my motorcycle and stay in a motel. Then drive my motorcycle once I get to my destination. That's here in the US.

What do y'all think of this vehicle for traveling around in Mexico. Availability of parts? I'm looking at buying a 1982-1984 model.

Just be aware that the Vanagon was never imported to Mexico therefore finding some parts can be a problem. Mexican mechanics do maintain them, however. Many parts can be interchanged.

Thanks for the response. I never could find a vanagon that they weren't asking gold plated prices for. So, I have converted a long wheel base cargo van into a camper van. I'm going to make a very very leisurely trip to Mexico. I plan to start out next week and arrive the later part of December.
