Given the United States' questionable track record with paid informants, does anyone else have some doubts about this informant? CNN reported that he was a Mexican who had previously been busted for some drug crime and cut a deal. There has also been speculation that he was in some way connected to Los Zetas.

After "Fast and Furious" I don´t believe much of what come out of Holder´s mouth. It seems all too convenient that a Mexican cartel is involved with Iran now that he is in the frying pan.

I believe that your post is a non sequitur. I see some truth in the fact that Zeta hit-men in the US are young and cheap who are willing to do just about anything rather than go back to the squalor from which they came.

The alleged hit man was met in Mexico, not the US. In fact there were 2 meetings in Mexico, 2 payments of $50,000 and one of the principal players was refused entry into Mexico the 3rd trip, sent back to the US where he was arrested.
I will stick with my opinoin of Holder. He refuses to answer questions directed to him about Fast and Furious.

The fact that Eric Holder was or wasn't involved has no bearing on my initial comment! Go back 10, 20 or even 30 years and the US doesn't have a great track record with their paid informants! This has nothing to do with whatever administration is in power at a particular time but rather the fact that the US seems to be particularly inept at this game. Criminals who have been arrested cut a deal to get paid and have their charges dropped - why would they not take advantage and embellish their value?

Fast and Furious is a whole different topic!

It will be interesting to see how this all unravels, given that you can not trust what the US government or the US media report. It has the makings of not a plot on the part of the Iranians, but of a very stupidly put together smokescreen from a dysfunctional justice department up to it's eyeballs in scandal.

Add the Mexican press to the sceptics. I was particularly struck by Mileno's headline on this story ("EU usa a zetas para frenar complot iraní") with the emphasis being on the U.S. government provocateur's ties to some of our more entrepreneurial illegal-service providers to our NAFTA partners.

The problem most people have with Glenn Greenwald (besides the usual complaints people have about those who think everyone deserves basic rights) is that he's generally correct in assessing these kinds of things. Surprised he missed the Mexican connection that makes this a "two-fer" for U.S. foreign policy.

I'm having a problem understanding what is controversial about the Mexican connection in this incident. The guy arrested lived for years in Corpus Christi and I am guessing the South Texas connection is what prompted him to try and enlist the Zetas. They certainly have a few people who are capable of carrying something like this out--at least on their home turf. This guy never met with anyone actually associated with the Zetas from what I have read.

Holder praised the Mexican government for its cooperation in the case so I don't see how the incident reflects poorly on Mexico. Not many people who read about the incident would focus on Mexico. This incident is about Iran.

Thanks Rick, I have lived in Mexico 10 years. I use to be like you, looking from the inside to the outside. Now I see things a bit different. Now I am like the rest of the world, looking at the US from the outside.

Alta -- of course, the sources I noticed may have been written earlier than ones you saw, but I concede your point that it's hard to blame Mexico, or even the Zs for this... at least if you're a rational person. But among irrational persons -- like, say, Republican state office holders and Fox News "analysts"? Rick Perry for one... he's already gone there.

Heck, you still run across people claiming Iraqi Republic Guards were crossing in the Big Bend, or that some Al Qaida guy was in the Tijuana jail. Not that I'm paranoid (not completely, anyway), but I see people making the case that "well, not this time, but it COULD happen," as a sales pitch for regressive policies.

Other than building walls I don't think the rest of those proposals are new or options that haven't been considered recently. Border security is a real issue in the Rio Grande Valley and Perry may have used this as a "pretexto" to advocate for something that most of his more than 1 million constituents would welcome. It is certainly not related to Middle Eastern terrorism, but there are reasons for concern about security in Texas counties which border Tamaulipas right now.

Well, maybe connecting this 'incident' to Mexico might play well for Perry's 1 million constituents (presumably Texans) but in my eyes it doesn't give much credibility to a presidential hopeful.

The 1 million plus constituents I referred to are indeed Texans and are the residents of Starr, Hidalgo and Cameron counties, who are coincidentially predominantly of Mexican origin. The concerns I mentioned have been precipitated by a low key, but intense, military offensive against the Gulf cartel and the Zetas along the Tamaulipas/Texas border that has been going on over the last three weeks. There was a major confrontation in Miguel Aleman earlier this week that had local law enforcement officers and CBP/Border Patrol mobilized in the Roma area.

No disagreement, although el gobernador buen-pelo doesn't get to make foreign policy, and certainly doesn't get to send any air force (manned or unmanned) across anybody's border. Hell, he can't even invade Oklahoma.

As it is, the "Iranian Zetas" story looks more ridiculous the longer time goes on, and those that tried to give it some importance early are looking more and more foolish. Perry's remarks may indeed have been for local consumption, but from this side of the border they sound not just like the blathering of a fool, but the blathering of a dangerous fool.

I think Perry will fall apart once the primaries get going. Like Palin, he can dominate at the state level but national politics is a whole other game. They could be strong governors because of extensive connections and ability to twist arms and call in favors. They don't have that on the national scene and must inspire people with leadership. And well....

In separate reports BBC and Al Jazeera are now reporting that the idea to kill the Saudi ambassador to the USA came from the DEA's confidential informant. They also show interviews with Corpus Cristi residents who say that their friend Mansour literally couldn't match his own socks some days (or didn't care?) and was the kind of guy who loses his keys, making him no KSM: not exactly a well organized mastermind. Mansour's compadres describe him instead as someone with 2 decades of interest in finding his latest meal ticket to pay for his Jack Daniels and prostitute habits. Looks like the govt. hit another home run in soliciting aid from the wrong parties, in efforts to try to prove that they are doing things to protect the public.

BBC and Al Jazeera also report that there is no money trail leading to Iran.

This begins to look less like Wag the Dog and more like Keystone Cops. Another case of a govt. CI manipulating both his handlers and his latest dupe(s)?

Maybe we should cut Holder, Obama, et al some slack, as they may have been sold a pig in a poke by their over-eager underlings and a hustler CI, who told everybody what they wanted to hear?

Kind of like how another cultural "leader" Oprah regularly promoted her latest big journalistic gem, great author, girls school superintendent, as she continued to be duped by a succession of scammers? Their desire to please the public and boost popularity exceeds their abilities to judge people and situations?

The Mexico tie-in? The scammer CI happened to be Mexican?
