Hello, My British husband got a job offer at a company in Toluca and we are considering living in Toluca or Metepec, Can anyone advise which is better and safe to live in ?or suggest any place near Toluca that is safe and well policed? having lots of amenities to occupy our spare time, pubs, bars,good restaurants, cinema, malls etc....I would really appreciate the help of anyone who is living in these places! The first thing you must learn about Mexico is that a well policed place means nothing. You cannot trust or rely on the police at all. This said, most of the bad guys are not after the expats . I am sure your husband will have colleagues who live in that area and can help you make decisions on where to live in the area and help you with your move. People in Mexico are friendly and helpful.

Mireille, I do not know if you are French but if you are, I met a French couple who was from the Loire Valley and had lived there for many years, you may be able to find them through the consulate in Mexico City if you are interested.
I have gone through and visited Toluca many times but unfortunately cannot help you on your move as I have never lived there.
Just know that both places are very high and that the winters are pretty cold.

Hello Dina,
My house is not far from this city in EdoMex and have lived for a spell in Toluca but some years ago so I'm not really up to date. For me personally I'd go for the Centro and since you mention amenities I think this might be true in your case also. I like where I can walk around. Kind of depends on your tastes. Metepec is a newer area and I had an apartment there in a working class neighborhood that was repeatedly robbed to the walls. Again, some years ago. Toluca has really grown due to people moving from the DF and there are some large suburbs like los sauces. Traffic has geometrically increased. It rains a mother in the summer and is cool just about year round, can be cold in the winter but cold by Mexico standards (jacket weather). I think Valley of Toluca might be highest major valley (?) at around 3.000 meters.

BTW, how is your spanish? There is a distinct lack of english speakers in Toluca which is one reason I like it. Although in the major auto plants (your husband?) english is the language of business but not everyone speaks it at the same level. Certainly more the board room and less the factory floor. What is your understanding?

I know a really nice Lebanese Mexican in Guadalajara if you ever get home sick.
