Interactive maps of intentional homicides, by municipality

This map on the Stanford University server, uses all the easily available data to show intentional homicide rates for every municipality for the last several years, using both the INEGI and Presidencia databases:

The map makes for truly fascinating "viewing" and clearly shows the relative safety of many tourist areas of Mexico.

Useful indeed, but probably needs some explication... not that I studied the map in any great detail, but it looks like the municipios with a high raw number of murders are ones with a large population (which you'd expect) and/or the kind of demographic that always has a higher murder rate (a larger number of young, single adults than average... like Juarez and Tijuana). AND, it would require much too much detail and explanation to break down those murders by colonia. Mazatlan, where I live is a HUGE municipio, and the murders are mostly in the 90 percent or so of the municipio never seen by foreigners, and even by most residents.

Still, an extremely useful tool for those who need to discuss such matters.
