Rumor that they wave the test if over 60. Others say this policy has come and gone in the past

I took the test & they didn't waive it for me or my friend that was in her late 70's. That was in 2008, tho'.

There was a MAJOR FORUM in 2005, 06 and 07 (no longer available) that was very active about all the questions arising about getting Mexican citizenship (and individual experiences at SRE offices all over México). As this was the period (2006-2007) that covered my solicitud, I read every post, no matter how redundant, and participated to a certain extent. There was absolutely NOTHING about any age-waiver on the test. As a matter of fact, I turned 70 four weeks before I took the test at the end of October, 2007. It would certainly have saved me A LOT of studying and cramming if there had been one.

Hey, and the citizenship test just asks a bunch of questions about Mexican geography and history... things its good to know anyway.

I agree ... just think a lots of gringos stick with an FM3 'cause it's easier. Less income to show, less dealing with the government ... and they don't have to learn Spanish

I've heard a couple of versions of this, beginning last year (2010) when revised naturalization regulations were supposedly in the works. Discussion tends to get derailed because most expats take it to mean that they don't have to learn Spanish. Those who were reporting the (proposed?) changes made it clear that only the history/culture test would be waived, and that over-60 applicants are still expected to have a functional level of Spanish.

A local language school gives a prep course for naturalization in coordination with the SRE. I'll be there for an event in a few days and will try to remember to ask if they know anything.

Well, I can't edit my previous message. The language center director confirmed that the history test is waived for those over 60 but emphasized that a certain level of Spanish is still required. Also that applicants need to go to SRE individually to present their history of being in the country and to see if other criteria apply. I gather the over-60 waiver is fairly recent, in the past year or so.
