Que Dios le bendiga

This may seem heartless but many years ago I learned to give to charitable
organizations rather than to people who regularly solicit alms. During my daily
waits to cross the border at San Ysidro, I would always give something to the
pathetic "marias" or their small children. That was until I saw the whole family
dining very well at a middle class restaurant in Tijuana. DIF is dedicated to
the needs of the truly impoverished but there are also foreigner-run nonprofits
if folks feel more comfortable giving through them.

It may seem heartless, too, but I agree with you, with one exception. I nearly always give to the elderly, knowing that they have little hope of finding a job or being able to work, due to illness or disability. Now that I am in my mid-sixties and very arthritic, I know how terribly hard it must be to get up in the morning, let alone sit on a hard concerete sidewalk and beg for your dinner.
