2 killed for snitching

For reasons only mods can conjure up, the other thread about the poor souls left hanging from an overpass in Nuevo Leon has been locked. Poor moderation IMO.

The question that wasn't brought up in the locked thread was whether these 2 were actually killed for snitching on an internet site that supposedly offers anonymous denunciations. Can the Zetas, by hook or by crook, find out who is making these denunciations, and then taking action or is this just a ploy to terrorize and convince the local population into not making their accusations?

Regardless of which it is, it has no doubt been very effective in deterring "anonymous" denunciations.

The event took place in Nuevo Laredo not Nuevo Leon. As you can imagine there are lots of stories circulating about the incident but the common thread in most of them is that the victims were acquaintances of people with ties to the Zetas. The two either said something to the wrong person about posting on blogs/social networks or someone saw something they posted and reported it.

It was probably just indiscreet chisme, although it could have been more threatening considering the brutality involved. I don't think it was purely a ploy if by that you mean they lifted two people at random off the street just to make a point. I mentioned the other three incidents to show this is not the first time the Zetas have butchered people and left their bodies on public display accompanied by blunt messages addressed to the civilian population. But this incident doesn't signal any major escalation of violence in my opinion or present any new risk to anyone who will be passing through Nvo. Laredo on their way to somewhere else.

Yes, Nuevo Laredo not Nuevo Leon. Have no idea where that came from!

That is more like what I imagined.I also figured that the victims must have had some type of connection with the Zetas, not 2 innocents yanked off of the street. But the message on the narcomanta has probably served its purpose as many people are ignorant of the technical part of the internet. It brings to mind the story of the woman at the beauty salon in Sinaloa who due to her repeating chismes about the narcos in the area, had her head shorn on the orders of a buchona who was also having her hair done at the time.

Although more than likely an urban legend, as I have heard it in many different versions, it does serve as a lesson about being very cautious when commenting on the narcos.

Like Bennie García, I have heard this same story from my Morelia hairdresser, told as if it happened two years ago at a different estética (beauty shop) in Morelia. According to the Morelia-based tale, the narco boyfriend of a customer in the beauty shop was waiting for her to finish up with her hairdo and manicure. Two other customers were chismeando about various narco situations in the city. The boyfriend got up, went out, and came back with two other narcos. They pulled down the steel curtain of the shop, forced all the shop customers (except the girlfriend) to lie on the floor, bound them all with duct tape, shaved their heads, grabbed the girlfriend and left the shop.

Like Bennie, I think this is urban legend--a good one, though.

There was another message killing over the weekend which will undoubtedly generate more media interest. There is more specific information about the victim in this case. She worked for one of the local newspapers and posted regularly on the website "Nuevo Laredo en Vivo." The narcomanta left at the scene featured her username in mocking fashion.
