Renewal of an Inmigrante Rentists

My husband and I have to renew our Inmigrante Rentists (first applied for last year). Rolly has been a big help but I was wondering if anyone had applied for renewal recently and what was required?

Since it might be a new card as the Inmigrante Rentists would no longer be in effect - I presume they will want new pictures. Do they now want them in color if needed?

If I bring copies of bank statements - social security benefits, power bill, passport page, application form, etc. - how many copies would I need to make? I'm not sure they would require them (we live in Puerto Penasco, Sonora) but just in case. Also the letter asking for renewal.

We live here full time and are retired on social security - so I'm hoping that we qualify under the new point system and it is up and operating in Penasco ;)

The rules for the new visa system have not been announced, so right now nobody knows what will be.
The current system remains in effect, so your renewal should be like last year.

We didn't renew last year - it was the first application. Had some one do it for us - put I, obviously, had to assemble all the paperwork. From your web site it looked like something we could manage ourselves and save $200! Especially since the Immigratiion office is in the same plazza as our bank. Unfortunately our Spanish isn't that good. And I keep worrying I'll do something wrong.

We have the new card rather then the old book - if that makes a difference.

Where are you? In the Lake Chapala area we can get it done for $400 pesos. You'll need a copy of your passport, your INM card, and pictures. You must initiate the renewal on the website.

We are in Puerto Penasco, Sonora. Prices are ranging from $125-100/each US. Last year when we first applied Florencia did it for $70/ea but she has since left town. For 400 pesos I wouldn't mess with it - but $200 buys a lot of grocs - or Coronas.

Another dumb question - we both applied for our FM2s at the same time but DH's ended up going to Mexico City (he had 'ugly papers') so my renewal date is Oct 19 while his isn't until 3 Dec. Can we renew them both in Sept or do they have to be renewed within 30 days of the different dates? Much easier doing it all at once.

Although by mid November the new laws might be in effect and he might qualify under the point system so he wouldn't have to renew again.

Any thoughts?

Just some thoughts.

It’s not so hard doing each of your renewals according to their due date. It gets easier each time, because you learn from the previous experience.

Although it is likely that the new laws will be in effect by December, my guess is that he will still have to do some sort of process leading up to his due date. Either he will still have to renew, or else if he qualifies by points, he will have to do some sort of application to register his qualified status.

I just renewed my FM2 for the second time. Same requirements as last year, good for 1 year.

This was our experience at the La Paz, Baja Sur office of INM 4 days ago for our FM2 renewal:

What we DID need-
- The Formato Basico (obtained from the link on Rolly's site).
- The Formato Migratorio para trámites de estancia (from the INM website)
- A letter to the delegado of INM stating our desire to continue to reside in Mexico and our request to refrendo our Inmigrante status and confirming/promising that we are living off of financial resources obtained from abroad and all other conditions remain the same as when we applied for our original FM2 Inmigrante.
- One copy of the photo and vital statistics pages of our passport
- Our photos
- The expiring FM2 cards
- Our US passports.

We did Not need:
- The letter confirming our domicile (we live remotely and do not have utility bills or an actual street address to prove our residence so we usually need a constancia from the mayor of the nearest town and i usually throw in a copy of our fideicomiso which shows our property location coordinates for lack of any other proof). If we did have any utility bills, we would not have needed them.
- We did not need the copies of our bank statements to prove income.
- We did not need the copies of every single page of our passports.
- They did not need a copy of our FM2 cards because the took the actual cards.

We left the INM office with a huge pile of papers because they returned most of the copies of everything I'd made!

To summarize: write a polite, business like letter to the Delegado that states your intentions and confirms and that you hereby swear etc, that your status is unchanged from your original application. According to the La Paz office, they consider the letter all encompassing and they do not require all the other proof every year for renewals if your conditions are unchanged.

Do not wear earrings when you have your picture taken, no matter how small. They let me slide this time because I forgot to remove them, but there was some discussion in the office and I almost had to re-do the pictures.

Don't forget your brown file folder for your each of applications.

Fantastic description of what is needed - thanks. Were your pictures in color or didn't it matter? Fortunately I don't wear earings or I'm sure I would forget them. I have the letter of request ready to print as soon as I do the application and get that all important number. Mine expires on 19 Oct so presume I can start the process by Sept. 19th. The pictures are in color. I can't recall if they need 2 front view, and 3 right side view or vice versa. To be safe I'd get 3 photos in both positions.

And I'm sure you know, your office could have completely different requirements so it never hurts to make all your copies of bank statements etc anyway.

We renewed our no inmigrante cards in july in the city of Puebla. Here, at that time, they did want financials. However, in San Miguel for our friends, they did not need financials.

For the best and up-to-date information, go to your local INM office and get the requirements in writing.

We live 5 hours from our nearest immigration office so before renewal visits, I research as much as I can for any changes to the rules, and make copies of everything and try to plan for different scenarios. But I agree, if the INM office is in your neighborhood, the best way would be to drop by and find out what they need.

oladulce, you make a very good point. Driving or riding for five hours can take a toll on oneself. For me it's a 10 minute drive to el centro. My only difficulty is finding a place to park near to the office. I guess that the only thing you can do is to look at what was required in the previous years and make an extra copy of everything. Or, haul everything with you and hope that there is a copy store near-by.

We just renewed our inmigrante rentista today.
We needed the same thing as oladulce. The oly difference is that the Bucerias office has their own letter that they will fill out for you, they prefer that to one you write yourself.
I must have had amnesia from last year, the 2801 peso/each fee was higher than I remembered it being. I'll be glad when we get to inmigrado and don't have to pay that each year.
Out of curiosity, what is the renewal fee for the whatever the old FM3 is called now?

The clerks in the Bucerias office continue to call our documents FM2's, and said they have no idea when the new regulations will come along.

Arrived today at the Puerto Penasco, Sonora, INM office at 10:40. One lady in front of us. A half hour later I was at the counter with my paperwork (Basic form, online form, visa card, photos, passport, bank statements, social security statement, letter asking for renewal and saying everything was the same as last year, CFE bill.

She rewrote the letter and typed it up for my signature and gave me a copy as I had told her my DH needed his renewed in December. She didn't keep the CFE bill but looked at it. Kept all the other paperwork, my card, photos, checked my passport - had me go next door to the bank where I paid my 2801 pesos, got my receipt and brought it back to her. This all took a half hour. They she said it would be ready in one week.

No one spoke English so I used my limited Spanish and charades. Irma was extremely nice and helpful. She did askj me to fill out a form saying how every thing went and if English online would help, if I had done it myself and if so how easy I found it to be, how the clerk had done, if there had been any request for extra money and if so what for, etc. Irma got excellent checked the whole way.

And I saved $100 by doing it myself (and with suggestions/help from my friends here) - not to mention the sense of achievement - old dogs can learn new tricks :)

Has anyone followed the progress of their renewal online? I tried putting in the number and the password but it indicates it can't find it - It was only started on Monday so maybe not enough time has elapsed - or, I'm doing something wrong. I've tried it with the seven 0' s in front of the number and also without the 0's. The password has on 'O' - which I presume is not a zero.

Irma at INM said it should be ready by next Monday. Hate waiting in line just to find out it is going to be the following Monday, etc. :)

My file popped-up the following day.

I entered the Pieza Numero w/o the 7 leading 0's, then the contrasena which is made up of 5 numbers, no zeros' or alpha characters in my case. A new screen then presents you with your NUT info. You don't have to enter the NUT as I found out after a few trials. Suerte.

Where did you get the contrasena number? All I got was the Pieza Numero and a five letter password. Tks

The contrasena is the password. It was included in the text of the info. sheet they gave me. It was at the end of the first paragraph.
