Bajagringo in critical condition

Can't Post | Private Reply
There has been terrible news today. Bajagringo (Ron) is a frequent contributor to many Mexico forums and sponsors his own Baja-oriented forum and website called TalkBaja.com. He is well known to many as a kind, generous soul who freely shares information about moving, living and traveling to Mexico and on several occasions has gone out of his way to help stranded Baja travelers by delivering auto parts, coordinating search parties, or doing whatever was needed to be of assistance.

Ron and his wife Cristina live on a remote stretch of coast outside the town of San Quintin, Baja California, approx 120 miles south of Ensenada. Sometime yesterday Ron saw several men at the unoccupied home of one of his neighbors and when he went to investigate he was severely beaten. Reports are that there were 7 assailants. When Cristina came over, they slit her throat.

Cristina was taken to the hospital in Ensenada first and there seems to have been a delay before Ron was transported. As of this morning Sept 11, it was reported she was on a ventilator in Intensive care and her condition was "critical".

Ron did not arrive at the hospital in Ensenada until midmorning today and not alot of information is known about the circumstances. Several hours passed after Ron arrived at the hospital and no treatment was being rendered to him because the hospital stated they needed permission from a family member to treat him. It's assumed that Ron must also be unconscious and there was one report of his condition being "critical" also. Ron's daughter was contacted and arrived in Ensenada from California this evening.

Luckily another neighbor witnessed the incident. There was a report that the police caught 5 of the guys and they know the identities of the other 2.

There is an active thread here http://forums.bajanomad.com/...thread.php?tid=55094

Please take a moment for positive thoughts for Ron and Cristina

A few years ago, he posted a message about the area in Baja where he chose to live. When I saw this unfortunate news, I was immediately reminded why access to emergency medical services is so important. I wish him the best.

I can't edit with this IPad to make the link live. At some more appropriate time, I think there may be some lessons to be learned and discussed from this terrible incident. No matter how long someone has lived in a foreign environment, they act upon instinct (learned in their native country) as to how they respond to various situations. While understandable, it can have unintended consequences.

This tragedy has a personal tie with me although I have never met the couple.
Their story of falling in love with each other and México is included at the end of my book, The Best How-To Book on Moving to Mexico.

Rolly, I recall Ron mentioning he had ties to you through your book somehow. The outcome is still uncertain at this point although Cristina's condition in particular does not sound good.

What a terrible tragedy. How humans can be so coldblooded is incomprehensible. May the perpetrators burn in hell for eternity.

This news makes me so angry, maybe I'm biased having had a very close member of my family murdered in a carjacking in LA so I have zero tolerance for violent criminals, what kind of monsters could slit the throat of this woman who was coming to the aid of her husband.IMO the perpetrators should be wrapped in chains, put in a leaky panga and towed out to sea to meet their fate.
Maybe Mexico should rethink the death penalty, think of the hundreds of murdered central american immigrants by the zetas,Casino Royale, etc, etc.I'm not saying it would stop the violence but some of these assholes just don't deserve to live..

How very very sad. Although I have never met Bajagringo, I loved the old picture he used on this forum. And I just have to post something because this so upsets me so much. I wish the very best for these two victims and their friends, who of course, also feel the pain, during these very difficult times.

Like you Pete, I have never personally met Bajagringo (Ron) or his bride Cristina. He has responded to several of my posts with questions and he was always helpful and informative in his answers. He really loves his Baja and his house he is building. I sure hope he pulls through as well as his Cristina. Although the same thing could happen NOB as well as here in Mexico, it is still an affront to the human race. I pray he and Cristina will come out of this OK. He is quite a guy. As I understand it, the whole pueblo where he is living really respects him a lot as well. Be strong Bajagringo. You both are in my thoughts and prayers.

The most recent report on the thread listed at the beginning is that Ron had an MRI and there was no intracranial bleeding. His jaw was fractured. His wife's throat was not cut but she was strangled. Both appear to be stable and improving. His family who came down from California do not plan on moving him. Much beter news than initially thought.

It does sound like he is doing better that's the good news. Sad that something like this happened. More reasons to not get complacent in how you live and exist in a foreign country.

Wow. I really enjoyed all of the photos he's shared of the building of his house. His love of the area somehow makes it even worse. Being strangled is horrifying...but hopefully her chances will be much better than having her throat cut. Just typing this makes me wince. I'm just so glad that they have survived long enough to give them a fighting chance.

What a beautiful couple...I so hope they pull through.... and I too wish that Mexico had a death penalty... a long slow one.

Hi all,

Just thought many of you would like to know, this was posted today by Ron Hoff AKA Bajagringo on Baja Nomads.

By Ron Hoff (today):

"While I have still to read through many pages of this thread I continue to be overwhelmed at the outpouring of support, from the Nomad community and beyond.

Responding to "unusual" inactivity at a neighbors (unarmed and without dogs) last Saturday I was "greeted" by three subjects, two of which were known to me. After an "escalating" exchange I was stabbed, beaten and left for dead.

What my wife did following was no less heroic, coming to the aid of her husband and following victim to the same, senseless violence.

Neighbors and friends responding, picking up my bloody, lifeless body and taking into their care Cristina. While they transported us to emergency care they assisted police in hunting down the perpetrators.

The care given us over the following days was no less spectacular and by Wednesday I had awoken from a coma. Surgery was performed Thursday to wire my jaw shut. Their attention for my care shifted from my primary wounds to my blood pressure. ( yeah, I know)

Cristina continued to improve in the care of family and outcare and today we both stand "freed" from a week of hell.

Many thanks go out to Sirena, Fernando, Gene, Reyes, Chava, family / friends, doctors / nurses and countless Nomads who have followed and contributed to our ordeal. A very special thanks goes out to Discover Baja Travel Club.

For now we would ask that you respect our need for healing / recovery in the coming days. "

Best of luck to you Ron and your Cristina and God Speed. I am sure this sentiment and well wishes come from your many friends on the mainland and many friends at MexConnect. You both are in our thoughts and prayers. Heal well.
