Citlaltepec "Pico the Orizaba" a giant in my memory

Can't Post |
In '79 a bunch of us flew down there and climbed(Alpine style) a few of mexico's volcanoes. Popo, Pico (we ran out of time to do Ixta) I was the youngest of the bunch, we had Viet vets, adventurers, etc in our group. I'll never forget listening to the sound of an engine and automatically looking up. John and Veronica Grubb (John was an Alpine guide back home) a Swiss couple we had met at the refuge, grinned at me and told me to look down(we were at 17,500 ft. having a snack). I looked down and there at about 10,000 ft. was a single engine plodding along, we were on a glacier that had started at about 14,000 ft....and that brings me to my question ..Are the glaciers in Mexico receding like the one in Kilimanjaro and some of the peaks in Europe? (I have friends in the Chammonix and they have not seen any change) Just thinking here of possibly climbing in Mexico this coming Feb..The view of the Gulf Of Mexico at sunrise was out of this world just a golden ribbon in the horizon as the sun rose over the waters......a view worth going back to....

Nice memory!
Here is an article on Mexconnect that was published a couple of years ago about climbing those volcanoes - with images.
Enjoy!

Glaciers are receeding worldwide, but those glaciers are still there, albeit smaller. Popo is closed to climbing, and may be closed for decades, still active. Izta is a nice climb, my favorite of the three.

The URL below has more info on climbing in Mexico

Just a mild correction, while it's true that there is a seemingly accelerated meltdown of icecaps world wide. This is not a uniform phenomena, polar caps specially Antartica, while calving ice shelves in a given longitude, is actually increasing in others, with a net gain in square mileage, Also the Gulf Stream flowing out of the Gulf of Mexico towards the Baltic sea and Scandinavia is experiencing a rather startling phenomena, super cooled waters from Artic melt down are colliding with this life giving current, lowering it's temperature before reaching the Channel, projections are that this side effect of possible earth warming can actually trigger another ice age in northern Europe on the inside of ten years(Discover Mag. Oct. Issue).

Thanks for the link and the response.
