American Network

Can't Post | Private Reply
Recently the American Network (that plays US TV shows all day long, in English, without subtitles, without commercials) has been running spots saying they are about to end. A little Googling has said that Televisa, the large Latin American company in the TV/network business, who apparently licenses the channel and rents it to other cable providers like Sky and TeleCable, has decided to end the service in Mexico. But there are almost no details available. This will be a disappointment for many expats including me, because I watch many shows on the channel (primarily news programming).

Does anyone have more information about what's going on? As usual, I'm sure it is something to do with money, but there's not much coming out about it. I for one intend to write my cable supplier about replacing it with US programming as it was a major reason I subscribed in the first place. It may not do any good, but I'll at least feel better!

There is a way to watch most USA broadcast and cable channels and many movies on your computer.
Free.

There is another for a small fee that shows more channels. Look here for details.

Rolly, that link leads to a login screen with no information. Is this the same one you were speaking about earlier on this board?

I give tech support at a local ISP (internet Service provider). Do you know what they dread most? Streaming video, because it uses so much bandwidth. Already companies are beginning to limit the amount of data one can download.

Me? I've got no problem with it. It's just that I'm lazy and have more C band and Ku band dishes than you can imagine, and so far have not needed to stream much. I even get my home town stations via satellite (Seattle in HD, Vancouver in SD). I will admit I couldn't watch one football game yesterday, so using an App. on my iPhone I streamed the radio station carrying the game.

Thanks to you both. So are you both using this service? How reliable is it? Do you recommend it?

Netflix launches in Mexico on September 12. Netflix has streaming rights to various CBS shows which were also on the American Network. It is possible that their is a problem with the rights to CBS programming.

Today when I switched on the TV to watch the CBS news on Sky - Nothing. I will miss getting USA news each afternoon and more importantly CBS coverage of SEC football.

Geaux LSU Tigers!!!

I also use Sky. Yesterday, the old AN channel had nothing on it, and today it was removed from the line-up. Yes, I'll miss the CBS Evening news, 60 Minutes, the morning shows, Face the Nation, 48 Hours, and the occasional special programming (generally news related), as well as the Letterman show.

Who knows what the problem is, however we can be certain money is behind it. I intend to contact Sky and ask how they intend to replace the programming for their English speaking subscribers. I doubt it will do any good, but perhaps if they hear from lots of us it might.

So maybe I need to think seriously about Shaw Direct. Any idea about availability in Morelia, Michoacán?

First go to www.shawdirect.ca and look at the programming and see if there is enough programming there to satisfy you. Quite a bit is from Canada, where I also live part time when the sun comes out. If you like what you see, look at the prices up there and realize that down south, it will be quite a bit higher. Check with your local satellite dealer and see what he offers. Typical prices in the greater Guadalajara area can be learned at www.cp-electronics.com where they speak both English & Spanish.

You will see that it's much cheaper to buy your stuff up north.

Good luck figuring out what you want. Also understand that where you live not DISH USA but DirecTV USA. cp-electronics also is good with DirecTV.

Good luck figuring out what you want

I too will miss this channel; the morning news, Letterman and 60 minutes.

Did any else notice most of the commercials on AN were ads for their own shows? I deal with several Televisa owned companies, my contacts speculate is was low ad revenue that doomed AN. Very few advertisers were buying time.
