Has anyone had recent experience with nationalizing a US car (newer vintage than 2001)at the Texas / Mexican border crossings?

Unless you are taking the car to the special zones in Sonora, Baja California, or California Sur, the rules are still the same. The only vehicles that qualify for Permanent Import permits are: only NAFTA made/assembled vehicles, assembled 10 years earlier between Nov. 1 and the following Oct. 31 of a given year. Just to clarify - this year you could nationalize a 2001 car between November 2011 and October 31 2012? Is that the correct interpretation?

The above information is incorrect according to Spencer who posted this on the Chapala.com board;

Posted 19 April 2011 - 06:38 PMYes, I just nationalized my 2003 VW Jetta last week. 60% of the places said the car had to be 10 years old or older, I told them they were wrong and kept calling others. Of the remaining places many said I had to be Mexican, again wrong. My car and I are living proof of what the law is and who can do it and how the car can be 8 years old or older.

That is because he "legalized" it through the State of Jalisco and not Aduana. So it ain't really legalized. Kind of quasi-legal in that it now sports Jalisco plates. It will be interesting to see what happens when he tries to sell it without a pedimento de importacíon.

Bennie, I'll let Intercasa provide the details, but what you say is simply not true. His car was "nationalized," i.e. imported and licensed legally.

No it wasn't. States aren't authorized to legalize vehicles. That is solely a federal matter. Just as in the USA, importation is federal law.

He got Jalisco plates, it was nationalized at the border. From now on pls argue with him about it.

I think I remember reading on another forum that he went thru the aduana at the GDL airport,I'll be going that route with my 2005 tacoma in a couple of years.

Hi,

It's me, Spencer. My vehicle, 2003 VW Jetta was nationalized with Aduana at the border in April. I got my pedimento and then went through the vehicle verification process to acquire Jalisco plates. My car is 100% legal and I have all the documents to sell, transfer or even get my car out of the impound yard.

I'm not sure if you know me or why you think I didn't do it properly but my car and papers are in order.

There are a few outfits or people offering to nationalize vehicles and some will not pay the tax or give you the pedimento which really does you no good as you couldn't sell the car or get it out of the impound yard. The US title stamped by the State is needed along with the pedimento to transfer the vehicle and Jalisco is one the of the strictest states to get plates in, therefore the reason I had to get in line at 5.30am and bring copies and originals and they wanted to see my pedimiento, without that you cannot get plates.

In Mexico all things are possible without being a magician and with having contacts. The "car" was nationalized legally at the "border" for all intents and purposes.
